A miscalibrated forward camera almost never announces itself with a warning light. Why a bad calibration usually lights nothing

The camera module checks that it completed a valid calibration. It does not check that the calibration was correct. Those are different questions, and only the first one is answerable from inside the module.

Here is the mechanism. A calibration routine ends by writing an aim offset into memory: the module now believes the camera looks a certain number of degrees down and a certain number of degrees to one side of the vehicle's centerline. If that number lands inside the range the manufacturer allows, the routine reports success and the module considers itself healthy. Nothing in the car compares the stored offset against ground truth afterward. The only test that ever happens is the world, and the world reports its findings as behavior rather than as a fault code.

There is a second layer worth knowing. Some modules do run plausibility checks while driving, comparing what the camera sees against steering angle, yaw rate and wheel speed. Those checks generally need road speed and a few minutes of consistent data before they arm. That is exactly why a certain class of fault appears only above 30 or 40 mph, and only after a few miles: the module is not broken at low speed, it is simply not testing yet.

Do not stage a test. There is no safe home experiment for automatic emergency braking or forward collision warning. The symptoms that are not the calibration

Not every complaint after a glass job traces back to aim, and going in with the wrong theory wastes the visit. Rule out the cheap explanations first.

  • A dirty or filmy camera window. The inside face of the glass in front of the lens picks up haze and installation residue. It is the single most common cause of intermittent camera faults and it costs nothing to check.
  • Wipers that smear across the camera view. A worn blade leaves a film exactly where the camera looks. If symptoms appear only in rain, start with wiper chatter and streaking before you blame the calibration.

A test drive that produces evidence

Vague reports get vague responses. Thirty minutes of structured driving turns "it feels off" into something a technician can act on.

  1. Pick a straight, well marked road you know with light traffic, and drive it in both directions at the same steady speed with lane centering engaged. Note lane position each way.
  2. Repeat the run at a higher speed if the road allows, because plausibility checks and range errors both grow with speed.

You do not have to park the car, but you should change how you use it. Treat every assistance feature as unverified until it is checked.
