Methodology: how our price ranges and decision rules are built
The short answer
- Prices on this site are typical 2026 US ranges built from the structure of a glass invoice, not survey data and not quotes.
- The estimator adds line items rather than guessing a total: glass and labor by vehicle tier, a glass tier multiplier, feature adders, calibration, consumables, mobile fee, then a location adjustment.
- Repairability thresholds come from published industry repair limits plus the practical constraints of resin injection, not from our own opinion.
- Every range is deliberately wide. A band that covers the real spread is more useful than a false precision that is wrong in most markets.
- When a figure cannot be sourced honestly, it is not published.
Every number on this site should be checkable in principle, which means you are entitled to know how it was produced. This page documents the price model behind the estimator, the thresholds behind the repair decision tools, and the rules behind the claim calculator.
What a "typical range" means here
It means the band that most quotes for that job land inside, in the United States, in 2026, absent unusual circumstances. It is not a measured statistic, not an average of collected quotes, and not a guarantee. The bands are built the way a shop builds a quote: by line item, from the bottom up. The low end represents an independent shop in a lower cost market using quality aftermarket parts. The high end represents a dealer or premium installer in an expensive metro using manufacturer branded parts. Real quotes outside the band happen, and when they do the question worth asking is which line item explains it.
The estimator model, in full
The cost estimator is deterministic arithmetic, not a black box. It computes a low bound and a high bound separately, adds line items, then applies a location factor.

The two glass tier multipliers are the uplift a dealer equivalent or manufacturer branded part adds to the glass and labor line: 1.1x to 1.25x, or 10 to 25 percent, for a dealer equivalent part, and 1.3x to 1.7x, or 30 to 70 percent, for OEM. Scarce or low volume parts can exceed even the OEM figure, and where that happens we say so in words rather than widening the multiplier.
Two things to note about how these combine. Each vehicle tier band is the price with a quality aftermarket part, so the glass tier multiplier is an uplift on top of it rather than a second estimate of the same thing. And a feature already implied by the tier is not charged twice: a head up display adder is not applied to the luxury head up display tier, because the band already assumes wedge glass.
Two design choices are worth naming. First, calibration is a separate line rather than folded into replacement, because that is how shops quote it and because a quote without it is a common source of surprise. Second, the multipliers apply only to the glass and labor line, not to calibration or consumables, since part tier does not change what a calibration costs.
Where the repair thresholds come from
The repair or replace checker uses limits that come from two places: the published repair standard used by the auto glass industry, and the physical constraints of resin injection. Neither is our invention, and where shops routinely work outside a published limit, such as repairing cracks beyond six inches, the tool says the practice exists rather than pretending it does not.

The claim calculator's rules
The claim calculator computes out of pocket cost on each route and then applies four decision rules: file any repair covered by comprehensive, because the deductible is commonly waived; never file when the price is below the deductible; treat a recovery under $150 as not worth a claim record; and weigh recovery against claim frequency once two or more comprehensive claims sit in the last three years. The $150 figure is a judgement, stated as one, and it exists because a claim is not free even when the payout is positive: it can cost a claim free discount and it sits on your file.
Known limits of this model
- It is national. A single metro can sit outside the band in either direction, which is why the location factor exists and why it is deliberately coarse.
- It does not know your option codes. Two identical looking vehicles can need different glass, and that difference can be several hundred dollars.
- It cannot see supply. A model with a back ordered windshield prices differently from the same model with three in the local warehouse.
- It does not model taxes, disposal fees or shop specific charges, which vary too much to be useful in a national range.

Where do your price ranges come from?
From the structure of an itemised auto glass invoice: part tier, labor, consumables, calibration and service fees, each with a range that reflects the spread between low cost markets with aftermarket parts and expensive metros with OEM sourcing.
Why not just publish an average price?
Because the average describes almost nobody. The same model year vehicle can cost $420 or $1,400 depending on option codes and calibration, so an average would mislead most readers in both directions.
Do you update the numbers?
Yes, at least annually and sooner if quotes routinely land outside a band. Material changes are logged on the corrections page so you can see when a figure moved and why.
