The phrase techs use is "walking the resin." You open a short segment, draw a vacuum, let resin migrate in, apply pressure, cure that segment, then move down the line and repeat. What a stop-hole actually does

Two caveats that separate careful work from careless work. The hole must be placed correctly relative to the true tip, which is often a hair beyond where the crack is visible to the naked eye. And drilling generates heat and vibration in glass that is already under tension, so a tech who drills carelessly can run the crack another three inches while trying to stop it, or leave a hole that acts as a new stress riser rather than a blunted tip. This is a genuine skill, and it is one reason shops that rarely do this work decline it.
What long crack repair actually achieves
- It arrests propagation. This is the main benefit and the one most reliably delivered. A stabilized crack normally stops growing.
- It restores some strength across the fracture. Cured acrylic resin bonded to clean fracture faces transfers load across the break far better than an air gap does.
- It seals the fracture. Water, dirt and glass cleaner can no longer wick into the crack, which is what turns a fresh silver line into a permanent brown-edged one.
- It does not restore appearance. Expect a visible line. Under angled daylight it typically reads as a faint gray seam, sometimes with a slightly wavy optical distortion. The improvement is real but partial, usually described as the line going from bright silver to faint gray.

Why so many shops refuse it

- Outcome variance. Two 10 inch cracks that look identical can behave completely differently depending on the residual stress in the panel and how contaminated the fracture is.

Long crack repair is the right call when all four are true: replacement is not financially realistic in the next few months, the crack sits outside the driver's primary view, both ends stay clear of the glass edge, and you accept a permanently visible line. Two situations where it is clearly sensible.
- A vehicle worth less than two or three times the cost of a replacement, where a 700 dollar replacement on a 2,400 dollar car is hard to justify.
