Most windshield cracks spread eventually, and no one can tell you the day. Glass does not fatigue on a schedule: a crack extends the moment tension at its tip exceeds what the glass there can carry, which is why damage can sit unchanged for two years and then run twelve inches across the glass during one cold start. What you can do is judge how loaded your particular break is, and this page gives you a scoring framework to do exactly that.

How a crack actually grows

Glass is strong in compression and weak in tension, and it fails from surface flaws. A chip is a large, deliberate-looking flaw with an extremely sharp tip, and stress concentrates there by a large factor. Two things then decide whether the tip moves. The first is the tension applied across it, from thermal gradients, from the body twisting under the bonded glass, or from a pressure spike. The second is time under load in the presence of moisture: water at a loaded crack tip slowly breaks the silica bonds ahead of it, so a break held under modest tension can extend without any new event at all.

That is the honest mechanical picture, and it explains the two things drivers find contradictory: a crack can appear with no impact at all, and an impact chip can survive years of abuse. The factors that drive propagation

  • Break type and existing legs. A clean bullseye is a contained cone with a rounded boundary and it is the most stable break there is. A star break already has radial legs, each one a sharp tip waiting for load. Combination breaks have both. Anything already classified as a crack has, by definition, a running tip.
  • Edge proximity. The bonded perimeter is where the glass carries load into the body and where the urethane restrains it, so tension is highest there. Damage within a couple of inches of the edge is both more likely to spread and generally outside repair limits, explained in edge cracks.
  • Temperature cycling. The inner and outer plies expand at different rates when the gradient across the laminate is steep. Defroster on high against frozen glass, hot sun on a cold morning, or a cold rain on a heat-soaked windshield all produce that gradient. This is the most common single trigger, and it is the subject of cold weather and defroster cracks.
  • Body flex and rough roads. The windshield is a stressed panel. Driveway aprons taken at an angle, potholes, washboard gravel and speed bumps twist the opening, and vehicles with more flex (pickups, body-on-frame SUVs, older convertibles) transmit more of it to the glass.
  • Speed and wind load. At highway speed the pressure differential across the glass rises, and it changes abruptly when a truck passes. This rarely starts a crack on its own but it adds to whatever else is loading the tip.
  • Car washes and pressure washers. Automatic washes combine mechanical load, temperature change and, in cold weather, warm water on cold glass. A pressure washer nozzle held close is worse: it applies a concentrated force directly over the break. Avoid both while damage is open.
  • Door slams with the windows closed. A closed cabin is nearly sealed, so a hard door slam produces a real pressure pulse that bulges the glass outward. Cracking a window before closing the door removes this entirely and costs nothing.
  • Existing repairs and contamination. A properly cured repair is usually stable, but a repair with unfilled leg tips, or a break that has been driven for months with dirt, wax and water in it, is both less stable and harder to repair well. Two worked examples. A half-inch bullseye in the center of the glass, 14 inches from any edge, on a garage-kept sedan in a mild climate, fixed two days after it happened: 0 plus 0 plus 0 plus 0 plus 0 plus 0, a score of 0, low band. A three-inch star break with a one-inch leg, three inches from the lower edge of the glass on a pickup driven on gravel in a state with hard freezes, six weeks old: 3 plus 3 plus 3 plus 4 plus 3 plus 2 equals 18, high band, so act within a few days.

What nobody can promise

Fracture in glass is a threshold event with a large random component, because it depends on the microscopic condition of one crack tip you cannot see. Any shop that tells you a break definitely will not spread is guessing, and so is one that tells you it definitely will. Two identical-looking star breaks in two identical cars can behave completely differently. The framework above ranks risk. It does not predict a date, and treating it as a prediction is the one way to misuse it.

One more asymmetry is worth stating plainly. If a repairable chip spreads, you do not lose a repair, you lose the option of a repair, and the replacement that follows costs several times more and, on a camera-equipped car, adds a calibration. What to do while you wait for the appointment

These steps do not strengthen the glass. They remove the triggers and protect your ability to get a good repair.

  • Cover the break on the outside with a piece of clear packing tape, trimmed small and kept out of the wiper path and your line of sight. It keeps dirt and water out of the cavity. Remove it before the appointment.
  • Put nothing else in the break. Superglue, epoxy, clear nail polish and household resins contaminate the cavity permanently and can turn a repairable chip into a replacement.
  • Warm the car gradually: defroster on low, outside air, temperature raised over several minutes. Never pour warm water on frozen glass and never scrape hard directly over the damage.
  • Park in shade in hot weather, and nose-out rather than facing full afternoon sun, so the glass heats more evenly.
  • Crack a window an inch before closing doors, and ask passengers to do the same.
  • Skip automatic car washes and keep pressure washers well away from the glass.
  • Slow down for potholes, speed bumps and washboard, and take driveway aprons straight rather than at an angle so the body twists less.
