How Soon to Repair a Windshield Chip
The short answer

- Cover the pit with clear tape. A small square of clear packing tape or a purpose-made chip patch over the impact point keeps out water, road salt, wax and dirt. Do not stretch it over a wide area, and use clear tape rather than duct tape so no adhesive residue or fiber contaminates the break.
- Do not put anything liquid in it. No superglue, no clear nail polish, no glass cleaner. Anything that cures inside the break blocks the repair resin permanently and can turn a repairable chip into a replacement.
- Keep the cabin temperature moderate. Avoid maximum heat and avoid maximum air conditioning against a hot windshield. Moderate settings for a few days cost you nothing.
- Skip the car wash. Both the thermal shock and the mechanical scrub are avoidable risks, and pressurized water can drive contamination deep into the legs.
- Crack a window before closing a door. It removes the pressure pulse entirely.
- Park in shade or a garage. Uneven solar heating is the most common overnight-to-morning trigger.
