Windshield Care and Damage Prevention
The short answer
- Most night visibility complaints are not the glass wearing out. They are the greasy film on the inside of it, which takes ten minutes to remove.
- Wipers do more damage to windshields than most drivers realize. A shredded blade or a dry wipe over grit cuts an arc that no cleaning will remove.
- Nothing hot goes on frozen glass and nothing cold goes on hot glass. Thermal shock is the single most avoidable cause of a chip turning into a crack.
- Coatings and films are worth what they cost only in specific situations, and they wear out fastest exactly where you need them, in the wiper path.
- A five minute check once a month catches chips while they are still a $60 repair and catches wiper wear before it marks the glass.
Glass looks like the one part of a car that needs no maintenance. It is not. A windshield accumulates abrasion from wipers and road grit, film on the inside from the dashboard, mineral deposits from sprinklers, and a slow loss of clarity that you never notice happening because it happens to you gradually. What actually matters, in order
If you only do four things, do these. Everything else in this section is refinement.
- Clean the inside. The haze that ruins night driving is almost always interior film from dashboard outgassing, not worn glass. The interior film page covers where it comes from and how to remove it so it stays gone.
- Replace wiper blades before they mark the glass. A blade that chatters or streaks is already past its useful life, and the next stage is permanent damage you cannot polish out.
- Control temperature. Ramp the defroster instead of blasting it, park in shade in summer, and never pour warm water on ice. Using the defroster without running a chip explains the mechanism.
- Look at your glass once a month. A chip caught this week is a repair. The same chip after a cold snap is a replacement with a calibration bill behind it. The five minute monthly check is the routine.
Cleaning, deposits and the things that etch
Cleaning glass is not difficult, but the order and the materials matter more than the product does. The important distinction is between contamination that sits on the surface and damage that has gone into it.

The pattern: anything sitting on top of the glass comes off, anything that has removed glass does not. That is also the line between a cleaning problem and a replacement conversation, which is why pitting and glare sits in the damage section rather than this one.
The wiper system is a glass maintenance item
Blades are the cheapest part of the car with the most direct effect on how well you see, and they are the most common cause of avoidable damage to the glass itself. Never run wipers on a dry, gritty windshield. That is a squeegee dragging sand across glass. It is the fastest way to put a permanent arc into the exact area you look through, and it is completely avoidable with a second of washer fluid first.
Winter and summer, the two damage seasons
Glass fails at the extremes. In winter the enemy is the temperature gradient: a hot defroster against a frozen panel, warm water on ice, a scraper on a chip. In summer it is the reverse, a panel baking at well above air temperature meeting cold air conditioning or a cold rain shower. Preventing chips in the first place
You cannot avoid every stone, but the exposure is not evenly distributed. Following distance, lane choice, the vehicle in front of you, the season and the road surface all change the odds, and the arithmetic is genuinely favourable if you change two habits.
