The Greasy Film on the Inside of Your Windshield

That haze is an oil film, not dirt, and it is why glass cleaner alone makes it worse before it makes it better. What the film actually is
Run a clean fingertip down the inside of the windshield of a car that has sat in the sun for a summer. It squeaks at first and then goes slick, and the fingerprint stays visible. That is a thin, uneven layer of organic oil with dust bound into it, sitting on bare glass.
The chemistry matters because it dictates the fix. Soft interior plastics, vinyl and adhesives are made flexible by plasticizers, and plasticizers are volatile. Heat drives them out of the material as vapor, and the vapor condenses on the coolest, largest surface in the cabin, which is the glass. A parked car in summer sun regularly passes 130 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit at the dash top, and outgassing rises steeply with temperature, so one hot week deposits more than a mild month. It is the same process behind the smell of a new car interior, which is why new vehicles fog their glass fastest and then slow down after a year or two.
Because the deposit is oil, a water-based glass cleaner emulsifies part of it and pushes the rest into an even smear. The panel looks worse in low sun than it did before you touched it. Nothing is wrong with the cleaner: it is being asked to do a degreaser's job.
Where your particular haze comes from

The last row is the one worth being honest about early. If you clean the glass properly and it is oily again by the next morning, especially with a sweet smell and wet carpet on the passenger side, stop cleaning and have the heater core pressure tested. Persistent interior moisture is also the first thing to rule out when the glass fogs easily and clears slowly.
Why it costs you more at night than outside dirt does
Because of geometry and pupil size, the same amount of contamination hurts far more on the inner face at night than on the outer face in daylight.
A windshield lies at a shallow rake, commonly somewhere around 25 to 35 degrees from horizontal on modern cars. Your line of sight crosses that panel at a shallow angle too, so you are looking through a longer slice of any film on it than you would through a vertical side window. Every bit of thickness counts more than it appears to when you look at the panel straight on from outside.
Then add the light source. An oncoming headlight is a small, intensely bright point. An uneven oil layer refracts and scatters that light forward into your eye instead of letting it pass, so the point becomes a bloom that spreads across a large part of your field. The technical name for this is veiling glare, and its practical effect is contrast loss: the pedestrian at the edge of the beam disappears into the halo. At night your pupil is wide open, which admits more of the scattered light, and the film also sits between you and everything you are trying to see rather than beyond it.
This is why drivers so often blame their eyes or their headlights when the actual variable is a five minute cleaning job. It is also why interior film and worn, pitted glass on the outside stack so badly together: one scatters light on the way in, the other scatters it again on the way through.
The removal routine, in order
Three passes, two towels, roughly fifteen minutes for a badly filmed windshield. The order is the part people skip.
- Work cool and in the shade. Alcohol flashes off hot glass almost instantly and leaves the oil it just loosened sitting on the surface. Garage, shade, early morning.
- Clear and cover the dash. Take the paperwork and electronics off the dash top and lay a towel across it. This catches drips and keeps degreaser off finishes it could dull.
- Pass one, degrease. Mix roughly 15 to 30 percent isopropyl alcohol into distilled water. Spray it onto a folded low-pile microfiber, never onto the glass, and work a one to two foot section at a time in overlapping straight passes. Refold to a clean face as soon as the towel glides instead of grabbing. On a heavy smoker's car, expect to do this twice and to see the towel discolor.
- Pass two, clean. Follow with an ammonia-free automotive glass cleaner on a second damp towel. This lifts what the alcohol suspended and takes the alcohol residue with it.
- Pass three, buff dry. A dry waffle-weave towel, straight vertical strokes on the inside face. Keeping the inside strokes vertical and the outside strokes horizontal is a diagnostic you will thank yourself for later, as the two-towel cleaning method explains.
- Go back for the three hard zones. The lower band above the dash, the top edge under the shade band, and the wedge behind the mirror. Film concentrates in all three and normal wiping reaches none of them.
- Check it against headlights. Sit in the driver's seat after dark or with the sun low and in front of you. That is the test condition, and daylight will hide a mediocre result completely.
Two things to keep off the inside face. Anything abrasive, including scouring pads, polishing powders and steel wool, because a scratch on the inner surface sits directly in your sight line and polishing it out of the driver's view introduces its own distortion. And any liquid sprayed toward the housing behind the mirror, which usually holds a forward camera and a rain sensor gel pad. Wipe there, do not spray.
Getting at the bottom eight inches
On a steeply raked windshield, the lowest band of glass sits under a deep overhang of dash. It is also the dirtiest part, because it is closest to the outgassing source and it catches defroster air. Reaching it is a technique problem, not a chemistry problem.
- Work from the passenger side with the seat slid all the way back. Sitting sideways in the door opening gives you an arm angle you simply cannot get from the driver's seat.
- Use a flat reach tool with a pivoting head and a thin microfiber over it. Keep the head flat against the glass. An edge-on tool concentrates all your pressure on a narrow line, and if grit is trapped in the towel that is how a scratch starts.
- Pull toward yourself in straight strokes. Pushing away lifts the leading edge of the head and skips the last inch, which is the inch that matters.
- Do the defroster vents at the same time. Dust blown out of loaded vents lands straight back on the glass you just finished.
Making the result last
Removal is the easy half. The film returns because the source is still running, and the source is heat acting on interior materials. Everything below reduces either the heat or the material.
- Shade the glass when parked. A reflective shade cuts the dash surface temperature substantially, and dash temperature drives the outgassing rate. This is the single highest-value habit here. - Stop dressing the dash top. Glossy silicone dressings are formulated to migrate and they migrate onto the coolest surface in the car. If you want protection, use a matte water-based product and keep it off the top surface entirely.
- Vent before you drive. Two minutes with the windows down and the fan on fresh air removes the loaded air rather than circulating it against the glass.
- Change the cabin air filter on schedule. A saturated filter holds oils and odors and returns them to the cabin every time the fan runs.
- Keep a dedicated dry microfiber in the door pocket. A thirty second dry buff once a week keeps a film from ever building to the point where it needs the full routine.
When it is not a cleaning problem
Three conditions look like interior film and are not.
- A film that returns overnight. Covered above: suspect the heater core, and check the passenger carpet and the coolant level before you clean again.
- Cloudiness at the very edge of the glass that no towel touches. A milky or feathered band creeping in from the perimeter is usually separation between the glass plies rather than deposit on the surface. - Haze you can feel as roughness. If a dry fingertip catches instead of gliding, you have surface damage rather than a deposit, most often from someone using an abrasive inside or a scraper outside.
