Pitting is thousands of microscopic craters blasted into the outer face of your windshield by sand and road grit over years of driving. It is surface wear, not a fracture, so no repair resin can undo it. The symptom most drivers notice first is not a mark on the glass at all: it is a new intolerance for night driving, with halos and starbursts around every oncoming headlight.

What pitting actually is

Every particle of grit that meets the glass at highway speed removes a tiny cone of material. One impact is invisible. A hundred thousand of them, over years, leave a field of shallow craters roughly 0.1 mm to 1 mm across. The glass is still structurally sound. What has changed is the surface: instead of one optically flat plane you now have a plane covered in curved facets, each able to scatter light in a direction you did not ask for.

Pitting is not evenly distributed: it concentrates in the lower half of the glass, where airflow drives debris onto the surface. Interstate miles do far more damage than city miles, because impact energy scales with the square of closing speed, and states that sand or cinder winter roads produce the worst pitting per mile.

The distinction that matters is depth. A pit is a crater in the outer surface only, with no radial legs and no separation of the layers below. A rock chip such as a bullseye or star break is a fracture that runs into the glass and can grow. Why pitting shows up as night glare

In daylight the world is lit diffusely, contrast is high, and a little scatter is lost in the noise. At night you are looking at a dark scene interrupted by a few extremely bright point sources. Each pit throws part of that oncoming beam sideways into your eye from a direction it should never have come from. Multiply by thousands and you get veiling glare: a luminous haze over the scene that lowers the contrast of everything you need to see, such as an unlit pedestrian.

Starburst spikes come from directionality. Wiper arcs and blade scuffs all follow the same sweep path, so their scatter is not random: it stretches into rays radiating from the light source. LED and HID headlamps make this worse, concentrating more luminance into a smaller, bluer source. Rain adds a second scattering layer and an oily film on the inside surface adds a third.

Rule out the cheap causes first. Interior film from plasticizer offgassing produces glare that looks identical to pitting and wipes off with an ammonia-free cleaner and two dry microfiber towels. Mineral etch and a worn blade mimic it too. Clean both surfaces before you conclude the glass is worn out.

Three tests that confirm pitting

None of these takes more than five minutes, and together they separate pitting from film, haze and scratches.

  1. The grazing angle look. Drop your eye close to the top of the dash and sight along the glass toward a bright light: a streetlight or low sun. At a shallow angle the pits catch the light and appear as a field of white sparkles. Repeat from outside. Unpitted glass looks black and empty at that angle.
  2. The fingernail drag. Draw a nail lightly across the outer surface in the wiper path, then near the top corner the blades never reach. Pitting feels like fine sandpaper in the swept zone and slick at the top.   3. Wet versus dry. Flood the outside with water and look through it immediately. Water partly fills the craters and softens the refractive index step, so scatter drops and the glass briefly looks clear. If glare vanishes while wet and returns as it dries, that is surface pitting. Film and internal haze do not behave that way.

What makes it happen faster

Pitting is unavoidable, but the rate is largely under your control. Dry-wiping is the biggest accelerator: a blade dragged across a dusty windshield turns every grain of sand into a grinding tool held under spring pressure. Keep the washer reservoir full, wet the glass before the blades move, and never use wipers to clear frost.

Beyond that: replace blades every six to twelve months, since a torn blade lets the carrier touch glass and cut hard arcs; skip brush-style automatic washes; use a plastic scraper, not metal; never clean glass with a dry paper towel, which drags trapped grit; and hold more following distance behind trucks.

Why pitting is a replacement item, not a repair item

A resin repair draws air out of a fracture cavity under vacuum, pushes in a resin whose refractive index is close to glass, and cures it under UV so the broken faces bond. Neither half of that applies here. There is no cavity to fill and no fracture to bond, only glass thinner in a million tiny places, and resin left proud of the surface is softer than glass, so wipers abrade it away in weeks.

Filling one deep pit is a normal finishing step at the end of a chip repair, which is why technicians talk about pit fill and pit polish. That is a spot operation measured in millimeters and it does not scale. Pitting is therefore an honest reason to replace glass and belongs on the list in when replacement is required. Do polishing and glass restoration kits work?

Cerium oxide polishing on a felt pad genuinely removes glass. That is the problem. To erase a pit you must take material down below the deepest crater floor across the entire area, evenly, to a tolerance the eye can detect.

A handheld polisher removes more where you dwell and less where you move, and the result is a shallow dish. A dish in a transparent plate is a lens: it bends the whole image, and that distortion is steadier and more objectionable than the scatter it replaced, especially at night and especially where a head-up display projects onto the same area.

There is a second issue. A production windshield is an optically controlled part, built to the light transmittance and optical deviation requirements of the ANSI/SAE Z26.1 standard that the federal glazing rule adopts. Hand-polishing the driver's view voids that control.

Polishing does have a real place: one scratch or a patch of mineral etch, done by a specialist with a rigid backing and a way to monitor how much glass is coming off. Even then, never polish inside the driver's primary viewing area, the wiper swept band in front of the driver, explained at the AS-1 line and the driver's critical viewing area.

Aging eyes, and the trap of cheap replacement glass

Two drivers in the same car do not see the same windshield. Forward light scatter inside the eye rises with age as the crystalline lens loses clarity, so identical pitting causes materially more disability glare at sixty than at twenty-five. Early cataract, dry eye, large pupils and recent refractive surgery push the same way. If glare is intolerable in glass that tests only moderately pitted, an eye exam is as reasonable a next step as a glass quote.

The other trap comes after you decide to replace. Low-tier aftermarket parts can carry more roller wave, seen as a rippled reflection when you sight along the surface at a low angle, and a car needing a wedge PVB interlayer for its head-up display will ghost badly if a non-wedge part is fitted. Typical 2026 national pricing runs roughly $300 to $550 for a mainstream sedan with no camera, and $450 to $900 before calibration once a forward facing camera is bonded to the glass, with calibration adding $150 to $800 on top of that. The replace-now decision

Replace when any two of these are true: the fingernail test is coarse across the whole swept area, oncoming headlights throw a halo wider than the car producing them, you cannot resolve lane markings in rain at night at the posted speed, or you have started routing around night driving. Replace without further debate if the glass also carries a chip or crack, since you pay the labor once either way.

If your car has a forward facing camera, factor it in twice. The camera looks through the same abraded glass, and scatter in low sun or heavy rain can degrade it exactly when you want it working.
