- A windshield is structural. It braces the roof in a rollover and backs the passenger airbag, so the adhesive bond, not the glass, is the safety-critical part of the job.
- Two things are non-negotiable: a written safe drive away time (about 30 minutes to overnight, set by the adhesive maker) and calibration of any forward facing camera bonded to the glass.
- Expect $250 to $450 on an older vehicle with no sensors, $300 to $550 on a mainstream car with no camera, $450 to $900 for mainstream glass with a camera, and $900 to $2,000 or more for luxury, head-up display or OEM parts.
- Calibration is a separate line item, often $300 or more. The quote should name the procedure, and the finished job should come with a post-scan and a calibration certificate.
- A quote without a glass part number and a calibration line is not a quote, because it does not say which part or which procedure you are buying.

The rule that governs the whole job
Your windshield is bonded to the body with urethane so it can do two structural jobs: brace the roof in a rollover, and back the passenger airbag as it inflates. That is why FMVSS 212 concerns retention of the glass, not the glass itself.
- The adhesive has a clock. Safe drive away time is when the bond will hold in a crash, not when it feels dry. It runs from about 30 minutes for a fast-cure high-modulus urethane in warm humid air to overnight in cold dry conditions. Ask for it in writing, with the product name.
- The camera has to be re-aimed. If a forward facing camera is bonded to the glass, replacing the glass moves it. Calibration is required every time, even when no warning light appears.
Budget accordingly: $250 to $450 for an older vehicle with no sensors, $300 to $550 for a mainstream car with no camera, $450 to $900 for mainstream glass on a camera vehicle, $900 to $2,000 or more for luxury, head-up display or OEM parts, plus calibration: dynamic at $150 to $350 and static at $250 to $600. How to make two quotes comparable
The same sentence, "windshield replacement for your vehicle", can describe a $310 job and a $1,400 job. Four items make two quotes comparable, and any shop working properly can give all four on the phone.
- The glass part number and maker. Not "OEM quality" or "aftermarket", the actual part. This pins down the feature package.
- The feature list. Acoustic interlayer, solar or IR coating, HUD, heated wiper park, rain sensor, camera bracket, de-metalized transponder patch. Read the monogram in the lower corner of your existing glass and match it.
- The calibration line. Static, dynamic or both, in-house or subcontracted, priced separately. A quote that omits it on a camera vehicle is incomplete or plans to skip it.
- The adhesive and the safe drive away time for today's weather at your location. That tells you whether the schedule has room for cure time.

The two clocks on replacement day
Scheduling causes more bad installations than incompetence, because a replacement runs on two clocks that pull against each other.
The first is the adhesive clock. Urethane cures with moisture from the air, so cold dry weather slows it, and a heated but dry garage can be the slowest condition of all. Water on the pinch weld is worse than slow: it prevents adhesion outright, which is why rain, snow and freezing temperatures should move a mobile job indoors. Almost always workmanship: a gap in the urethane bead, a lifted moulding, a clogged cowl drain or trim that was not seated. Workmanship is normally covered for as long as you own the vehicle. Go back to the shop that did the work rather than to a second shop.
Can a windshield be replaced in the rain?
