ADAS Calibration After Windshield Work

The short answer

  • If a camera looks up the road from behind your mirror, replacing the glass moves that camera, and the car has to be told where the camera now points.
  • Aim error is angular, so it grows with distance. A fraction of a degree at the bracket becomes feet of error at the range where automatic braking has to make a decision.
  • Static calibration uses targets at fixed positions in a controlled bay. Dynamic calibration uses a road drive. Many vehicles require both, and the manufacturer's procedure for your VIN decides, not the shop.
  • Budget $150 to $400 for a single procedure, and $400 to $800 or more where both are required or a dealer does the work.
  • No warning light is not evidence of correct aim. The proof is a post-scan and a calibration record naming the systems that were completed.

Your windshield is a mounting surface for a camera that decides whether your car brakes for the vehicle ahead. Replace the glass and that camera moves, by a millimeter or two of position and a fraction of a degree of angle. Calibration is the procedure that re-establishes where the camera is pointing and what it should consider straight ahead and level. This section covers when it is required, how the two procedure families work, what a correct job looks like on paper, and what goes wrong.

What is actually mounted to your glass

Four things commonly sit against or behind the windshield, and only one of them needs calibration.

Cameras elsewhere on the car, the reversing camera, the surround view cameras in the mirrors and grille, the trailer camera, do not sit on the windshield and are not disturbed by glass work. Why a millimeter at the glass is feet down the road

Camera aim is angular. An error introduced at the bracket does not stay the size it started: it opens out with range. A camera aimed a fraction of a degree high or low is looking at a different part of the road at the distance where an automatic braking decision gets made, which is exactly the distance where you cannot see the mistake and the system can. That is the entire technical argument for calibration, and it is why "the light is off so it must be fine" is not a test. The system does not know it is misaimed. It believes what it sees.

The consequence is not an inconvenience. A misaimed camera can brake late, brake for nothing, or steer a lane centering system toward one line. Those are all things you find out about at highway speed. If your car has a forward camera, calibration is part of the job, not an upsell, and a shop that treats it as optional is telling you something about the rest of their work.

The two procedure families

Every calibration in use today is a version of one of two ideas, or both in sequence.

  • Static. The car sits at a measured position in front of printed targets, on a level floor, with controlled lighting, correct tire pressures and a specified load state. A scan tool runs the manufacturer's routine and the camera solves its own orientation from the known geometry.
  • Dynamic. A technician drives the car at a required speed range on a road with clear lane markings while the scan tool runs a learn routine. The camera calibrates against the real world.
  • Both. Many manufacturers require a static procedure followed by a road drive to confirm it. Whether yours does is a property of the VIN and the software revision, not of the shop.

What you should be handed at the end

Calibration is invisible. The paperwork is the only evidence you will ever have, and it is the evidence that matters if a system misbehaves later or you sell the car.

  1. A pre-scan taken before the work, showing what the car already had stored.
  2. A post-scan taken after, showing no new faults.
  3. A calibration record naming the systems completed, not a line on the invoice reading "calibration".
  4. A note of the procedure type, static, dynamic or both, and where the drive was performed if there was one.

What it costs and why

Typical 2026 US ranges: $150 to $350 for a dynamic procedure, $250 to $600 for a static one, and $400 to $800 or more where both are required or the work goes to a dealer. The spread is not arbitrary. A static bay is floor space that cannot be used for anything else, plus target sets, alignment equipment, a scan tool with a live manufacturer subscription and a technician who can run it.
