Which Safety Sense generation you have, and why it matters
Toyota has shipped several generations under the same badge, and the hardware behind the glass is not the same across them. Lexus sells the identical engineering as Lexus Safety System+. The window sticker, the owner's manual or the shop's VIN lookup tells you which one is parked outside. Treat the years below as the rough shape of the rollout rather than a hard cutoff, because Toyota phases systems in model by model.

The reason to pin this down before booking is that two cars of the same model year can be built differently, which is the whole subject of why two identical cars need different windshields. A quote built from year, make and model alone does not know whether your car has the camera.
The camera moves, the radar does not
Safety Sense is a fusion system. The camera classifies what it sees, lane lines, vehicles, pedestrians, signs, while the radar measures range and closing speed with far better accuracy than a camera can. Pre-collision braking and full speed adaptive cruise rely on both agreeing.
Only one of the two is disturbed by a windshield. The camera comes off the old glass and goes onto the new one, so its aim is now unknown and has to be re-established. The radar sits behind the front emblem or in the grille, several feet away, and a glass job never moves it. Radar aiming is collision repair work. If it appears on a plain glass invoice, ask why, because you are paying for a procedure the car did not need. The other things behind your mirror are not ADAS and are not calibrated: the rain and light sensor rides on a gel pad and needs a fresh pad rather than an aim, and the mirror itself simply transfers. Both belong in the quote as labor, and both are covered in sensor and mirror transfer.
What the target procedure demands of a shop
Most Toyota and Lexus forward camera aiming is target based, and some models add a road portion. The specific service procedure for your VIN governs, so ask the shop to tell you which it is from the service information rather than from memory. What target based work requires is physical and non negotiable:
- A level floor with room ahead of the car. The target has to sit at a measured position in front of the vehicle, square to its thrust line. A bay with a drain crown or a sloped apron disqualifies itself.
- The car at its normal ride height. Specified tire pressures, no cargo, no roof load, nobody sitting in it, and on some procedures a stated fuel level. A trunk full of tools tilts the whole car and therefore the camera.
- Controlled light. Even illumination, no direct sun on the target, no reflective roll-up door behind it.
- The right target for the brand. Target boards are manufacturer specific. A shop with a Subaru target set is not equipped for your Toyota.

The one question that sorts shops quickly. Ask: do you perform Toyota camera calibration in your own bay, and can I see the bay. A shop that calibrates in house will answer in one sentence and often show you the space. A shop that sublets will say so, which is perfectly fine, but you then want the sublet partner named on the paperwork so responsibility is not split three ways later.
Dealer pricing versus an equipped independent
Calibration is a separate procedure with its own labor, tooling and space cost, so it is priced separately everywhere. What changes between providers is the hourly rate, the queue and what else gets bundled in.

The dealer premium buys factory tooling, factory targets and service information for your exact VIN. It does not automatically buy better glass work, because many dealers sublet the actual replacement to a glass company. Decide which half of the job you are worried about before you pay the premium for both.
Where Lexus changes the arithmetic
Mechanically a Lexus camera is aimed the same way as a Toyota one. What changes is the glass. Acoustic interlayers, infrared reflective coatings and a heads up display all push the windshield itself well past the mainstream band, sometimes into four figures before anyone has calibrated anything, and a display equipped car is genuinely fussy about which windshield goes back in because the projection is aimed through a wedge in the laminate. The practical consequence: on a Lexus with a display, the money argument for aftermarket glass gets much weaker, while on a Corolla it is often the sensible call.
How this looks on the common Toyotas

What to insist on in writing
- The procedure named. Static, dynamic or both, taken from the service information for your VIN, written on the estimate before work starts.
- Who performs it and where. In house or a named sublet partner, with the address of the bay if the car is leaving the property.
- Pre-scan and post-scan reports. The pre-scan protects you by recording what was already stored before anyone touched the car.
- A calibration record carrying your VIN, the date, the systems addressed and a pass result. Keep it with the service history, for the reasons set out in calibration, liability and your records.
- What happens if it will not pass. Agree in advance who pays for a second attempt or a different windshield.

Does a Toyota Corolla need calibration after a windshield replacement?

Is Lexus Safety System+ the same as Toyota Safety Sense for calibration?

Lexus models often carry acoustic interlayers, infrared coatings or a heads up display, which raises the part cost sharply and narrows your sensible glass options.
Can any glass shop calibrate a Toyota, or does it have to be the dealer?
