Windshield Repair FAQ
The short answer
- Most chips and short cracks are repairable. What decides it is size, distance from the edge, whether the break reaches the inner ply, and whether it sits in the driver's view.
- Chip repair runs $60 to $150 cash, takes 20 to 40 minutes, and is often $0 out of pocket under comprehensive coverage.
- Replacement runs $250 to $450 basic, $450 to $900 with a forward facing camera, and $900 to $2,000 or more for luxury, HUD or OEM glass.
- ADAS calibration is billed as a separate line whenever a forward facing camera is bonded to the glass, commonly adding around $300, and the shop should hand you a certificate showing it was completed.
- Glass law and zero deductible glass coverage are set state by state, so verify the rule where your car is registered and read your own declarations page.
This page answers the 45 questions drivers ask most often about windshield chips, cracks, repair, replacement, glass claims and state law. Every answer gives the number or the rule first, then the exception, then a link to the page that covers it in depth. Prices are 2026 national ranges drawn from field practice rather than a survey, and the ranges are explained in the cost methodology.
Repair basics
Can a 6 inch crack be repaired?
Usually yes. Six inches is the common upper limit for crack repair, and some shops will run a clean single crack longer. Length is rarely the disqualifier: a crack within about 2 inches of the edge, one that branches, or one that breaks the inner glass ply is a replacement. Expect $80 to $200 and a faint remaining line. See long crack repair.
How does windshield chip repair work?
A technician opens the impact point if needed, seals an injector over it, then alternates vacuum and pressure cycles that pull air out of the break legs and drive acrylic resin in. The resin is cured with UV light, scraped flush with a razor and pit polished. The repair restores strength and stops spreading, and it removes most, not all, of what you can see. More: how chip repair works.
Should I repair or replace my windshield?
Repair if the damage is a chip up to about a quarter in diameter or a crack up to about 6 inches, sits more than 2 inches from the edge, and has not gone through the inner ply. Fail any of those three and it is a replacement. Damage in the driver's primary viewing area is the judgement call: standards discourage it, shops differ, and some drivers accept a faint mark to stop the spread. Work through the repair or replace tool to get the call in about a minute.
How long does a windshield chip repair take?
20 to 40 minutes for a single chip. The resin work itself is roughly 15 minutes of that, and the rest is setup, cleaning and cure. A second chip adds 10 to 15 minutes, and a long crack takes 45 to 90 minutes. There is no drive away wait after a repair, because UV cured resin is hard the moment the lamp comes off. See how long repair takes.
Will the chip be invisible after the repair?
No. A good repair removes the silver or white look of trapped air and leaves a small permanent mark you can find if you look for it, usually a faint dot at the impact point or a hairline where a leg was. Older, contaminated breaks stay more visible because dirt in the legs blocks resin. See what a repaired chip looks like.
Is mobile windshield repair as good as in shop?
For chip repair, yes, provided the glass is dry and in a workable temperature range, roughly 60 to 80 degrees F at the glass surface. Rain, direct summer sun and freezing temperatures all hurt resin flow, so a driveway job on a bad weather day is worse than a bay. For replacement, urethane cure conditions and calibration space favor the shop. Compare both in mobile vs in shop.
Damage and urgency
How long can I drive with a cracked windshield?
There is no universal grace period. A short crack away from the edge is not an emergency, but plan on days rather than months, because cracks spread. What FMVSS 212 covers is keeping the glass retained in a crash. Separately, as a matter of physics, that bonded laminated panel braces the roof and gives the passenger airbag something to push against, and a long crack works against both. Legality is separate and set by your state. See is a cracked windshield dangerous.
Will a small crack keep spreading?
Most do eventually. Glass is under load, and a crack runs from its tip when something changes the stress at that point: a temperature swing, body flex over a pothole, a door slammed with the windows up, or hot water at the car wash. Nothing predicts the day it runs. Edge cracks and cracks already past 3 inches move fastest. See will a crack spread.
How soon should I fix a rock chip?
Within about a week is the practical rule, and sooner in freezing or very hot weather. A fresh break is clean and dry, which is exactly what resin needs, so early repairs both look better and bond better. Once dirt, wax and water work into the legs, clarity drops, though strength is still restored. Cover it with clear tape meanwhile. See how soon to repair a chip.
Why did my windshield crack with no impact?
That is almost always a stress crack. It starts at the edge of the glass from a manufacturing flaw, body flex, a pinched or corroded pinch weld, or a fast temperature change, and it often appears overnight with no visible impact point. Stress cracks are not repairable: there is no pit to inject and they begin in the edge zone. See stress cracks vs impact cracks.
Can the defroster crack my windshield?
It can finish damage that is already there. Hot air aimed at frozen glass puts the inner ply in tension while the outer ply is still cold, and an existing chip or edge flaw becomes the starting point for a crack. Warm the cabin gradually on low heat and never pour hot water on ice. See cold weather and defroster cracks.
What kind of chip do I have?
The common breaks are the bullseye (a dark circle with a clean cone), the star break (short legs radiating from the pit), the combination break (a bullseye with legs), the half moon, the surface pit, and the floater or edge crack. The type drives both repairability and price. Identify yours with the damage identifier, and look up any unfamiliar term in the glossary.
Cost
How much does windshield chip repair cost?
Expect $60 to $150 cash for the first chip and $10 to $40 for each additional chip repaired in the same visit. With comprehensive coverage it is very often $0 out of pocket, because most insurers waive the deductible on repair. Dealer and premium mobile pricing runs higher. Full breakdown: chip repair cost.
How much does it cost to repair a long crack?
$80 to $200 for a crack up to about 6 inches, with the top of that range for longer cracks, multiple legs, or a shop using a crack expander and premium low viscosity resin. Some shops price per inch beyond the first few. If a crack repair quote runs past $200, price a replacement against it. See crack repair cost.
How much does a windshield replacement cost?
Roughly $250 to $450 for a basic windshield with no camera, $450 to $900 for a mainstream vehicle with a forward facing camera before calibration, and $900 to $2,000 or more for luxury, HUD or OEM glass. Calibration is billed on top of all three. See replacement cost and price by vehicle type.
How much does ADAS calibration cost?
$150 to $350 for a dynamic calibration (a road drive with a scan tool), $250 to $600 for a static calibration (targets set on a level floor in a controlled bay), and $400 to $800 when the vehicle requires both. It appears as a separate line on most invoices, so always ask whether a glass quote includes it. See ADAS calibration cost.
Why is my windshield quote so much higher than my neighbor's?
Four variables explain nearly all of the spread: what the glass carries (camera, rain sensor, HUD wedge PVB, acoustic interlayer, heating element), OEM versus aftermarket, whether calibration is required, and local labor rates. Two sedans of the same model year can differ by $700 for those reasons alone. See what drives the price.
How can I estimate my cost before calling a shop?
Start from the vehicle and its glass features (no camera, camera, or HUD and luxury), then add calibration if the car has lane keeping or automatic emergency braking. The cost estimator does that math and returns a range to hold quotes against. Treat a quote far below the low end of the range as a question to ask, not a bargain.
Insurance
Does insurance cover windshield repair?
Comprehensive coverage pays for glass damage, and most insurers waive the deductible on a chip repair because repair costs them far less than replacement. That makes repair commonly $0 out of pocket. A liability only policy covers nothing. Confirm the glass line on your declarations page. See does insurance cover repair and glass coverage endorsements.
Will a glass claim raise my rates?
A comprehensive glass claim is not an at fault accident and generally does not move a rate on its own. It is still a claim on your record, and repeated claims can affect a renewal offer or a claim free discount. Rating rules differ by state and by company, so ask your agent about your policy. See will a glass claim raise my rates.
Should I pay cash or file a claim?
Compare the bill to your deductible, which is typically $250, $500 or $1,000. A $60 to $150 chip repair is almost always cash or a no deductible repair claim. A $1,400 replacement with calibration against a $500 deductible is usually a claim. Run your own numbers in the claim calculator before you call anyone.
Which states have zero deductible glass coverage?
A small number of states require insurers to offer or provide full glass coverage with no deductible, and the details differ: some cover repair only, some cover replacement, and in some it is an optional endorsement you have to buy. Verify the current rule for your state and read your declarations page. See zero deductible glass states.
How do I file a glass claim?
Call the glass line on your insurance card or open a claim in the app, then give the date, the cause, the damage type and its size, and the shop you have chosen. Most glass claims are handled by a third party administrator, approved on that call, and billed by the shop directly. Keep the claim number. See how to file a glass claim.
Can my insurance company make me use their shop?
Generally no. An insurer can recommend a network shop and can limit what it will pay to a prevailing market rate, but the choice of who works on your car is yours, and several states regulate steering directly. Get any price agreement in writing before work starts, and verify your state's rule. See shop choice and steering.
Are free windshield replacement offers real?
They are usually real in the narrow sense that you pay nothing at the counter, because the shop bills your comprehensive coverage and, where glass coverage carries no deductible, collects the full amount from the insurer. Cash back, gift cards or a promise to cover your deductible are red flags and are prohibited in some states. See free windshield offers explained.
Replacement and calibration
When does a windshield have to be replaced instead of repaired?
Replace when the damage breaks the inner glass ply, sits within about 2 inches of the edge, runs longer than about 6 inches, is a stress crack with no impact point, or sits directly over a camera bracket or rain sensor gel pad. Damage in the driver's primary viewing area is a judgment call, not an automatic replacement. See when replacement is required.
Does my car need ADAS calibration after a windshield replacement?
If a forward facing camera is mounted to the windshield, yes. Moving the glass shifts the camera aim by fractions of a degree, which moves lane keeping and automatic emergency braking targets far down the road. Whether it is static, dynamic or both is set by the manufacturer procedure. Ask for the calibration report with your invoice. See ADAS calibration explained.
How long does a windshield replacement take and when can I drive?
Plan on 60 to 90 minutes for the install, then safe drive away time for the urethane, which commonly runs from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the adhesive, temperature and humidity. Calibration adds more: 20 to 60 minutes of driving for a dynamic, 45 to 120 minutes for a static, and 2 to 3 hours when the vehicle needs both. That wait exists because the adhesive supports the passenger airbag, so get the time in writing. See safe drive away time.
Is OEM glass worth the extra money?
For most vehicles a quality aftermarket windshield built to FMVSS 205 and ANSI/SAE Z26.1 performs the same for hundreds less. OEM earns its price when the car has a HUD wedge PVB, an unusual camera bracket, or an IR and solar coating, where aftermarket optics can cause distortion or a failed calibration. See OEM vs aftermarket glass and glass features.
How do I choose a windshield shop?
Ask three questions: do you follow the AGSC/AGRSS replacement standard, which urethane do you use and what is its safe drive away time, and do you calibrate in house or sublet it. A shop that cannot answer those is guessing. Quotes far under the market range usually mean cheap glass, a skipped primer step or no calibration. See choosing a shop and cheap replacement red flags.
DIY
Do DIY windshield repair kits actually work?
On a small, fresh bullseye, yes: a $10 to $30 kit can stop the break from spreading. A kit cannot pull a real vacuum the way a professional injector does, so air stays trapped in star legs and the finished appearance is worse than a professional repair. A poorly filled break also makes a later professional repair harder. See how repair kits work.
Should I do it myself or pay a pro?
Do it yourself only when the chip is smaller than a dime, fresh, dry, outside the driver's view, and you can accept a rough cosmetic result. Pay a professional for anything in your line of sight, any star or combination break, any crack, and any chip you could claim on insurance, since repair is often $0 out of pocket anyway. Compare: DIY vs professional.
How do I use a windshield repair kit correctly?
Work in shade with the glass dry and roughly 60 to 80 degrees F. Clean the pit without pushing debris deeper, seat the applicator centered over the impact point, cycle pressure slowly and give the resin several minutes to travel the legs, then cure it and scrape the surface flush with a razor held at a low angle. See step by step kit repair and temperature and repair quality.
What ruins a DIY windshield repair?
Five things account for most failures: water or glass cleaner left in the break, working in direct sun so the resin cures before it fills, rushing the pressure cycle, over drilling the pit, and curing with excess resin on the surface so it hardens into a lump. None of them can be undone once the resin sets. See mistakes that ruin a repair.
How do I stop a crack from spreading until I can get it fixed?
Cover the damage with clear packing tape to keep out dirt and water, park in the shade, skip the car wash, warm the cabin gradually instead of blasting the defroster, and take rough pavement gently. None of that is a repair and tape does not bond glass. See stop a crack from spreading and temporary fixes that work.
Legal and inspection
Is it illegal to drive with a cracked windshield?
It depends on your state. The general rule almost everywhere is that damage must not obstruct the driver's clear view, and some states add specific limits on crack length or on damage inside the wiper sweep. Enforcement varies widely. Read the page for the state where your car is registered on windshield laws by state before you assume yours is legal.
Will a chip or crack fail a state safety inspection?
In states that run a periodic safety inspection, a crack in the driver's view, damage that has spread across the wiper sweep, or anything that interferes with wiper contact is a common failure, while a small chip low on the passenger side often passes. Many states have no periodic inspection at all. Check inspection states for your state's practice.
What is the AS-1 line?
The AS-1 line is a mark etched near the top of most windshields. It is a manufacturer convention rather than a federal measurement, and state tint laws adopted it as the boundary: film is generally allowed above the line and restricted below it. ANSI/SAE Z26.1 is a separate thing, the glazing standard that defines the AS-1 class of glass itself. Many statutes reference the line, or reference the wiper sweep instead, treating glass above it as outside the critical viewing area. Damage below the line, in front of the driver, gets more scrutiny. See the AS-1 line and driver view.
Can I get pulled over just for a cracked windshield?
In many states a cracked windshield is grounds for a stop on its own, while in others it is a secondary offense that only applies once you are stopped for something else. Outcomes range from a warning to a correctable violation you clear by fixing the glass and showing proof. Penalties vary by state and court. See getting a ticket for a cracked windshield.
Does a windshield have to meet a federal standard?
Yes. Glazing sold in the US must meet FMVSS 205, which incorporates ANSI/SAE Z26.1 performance requirements, and the installation has to keep the glass retained in a crash under FMVSS 212. That is why a windshield is laminated: two glass plies bonded to a PVB interlayer, a panel that also braces the roof and backs the passenger airbag. The DOT code etched in a corner identifies the maker. See laminated glass explained.
Aftercare
Can I wash my car after a windshield repair?
Yes, immediately. UV cured resin is fully hard when the lamp comes off, so there is no tape, no waiting period and no restriction on washing, wipers or the defroster after a chip repair. If the repaired spot looks slightly hazy in low sun, that is normal resin and pit polish rather than a failure. See the repair quality checklist and pitting and glare.
When can I remove the tape after a windshield replacement?
Leave the retention tape on for about 24 hours. It holds the mouldings in place while the urethane cures and is not holding the glass. For that first day, skip the car wash, avoid slamming doors with the windows fully up, and leave a window cracked so cabin pressure cannot push a fresh bead. See how replacement is done.
My new windshield whistles or leaks, is that normal?
No. A whistle at highway speed usually means a moulding is not seated or the bead has a gap, and water intrusion means a void in the urethane or a contaminated pinch weld. Both are installation defects and both are the shop's responsibility. Do not wait: a leak rusts the pinch weld and makes the next install worse. See leaks and wind noise.
My repaired chip cracked later, what now?
Take it back. Most shops warrant a repair for as long as you own the vehicle, and the standard remedy is crediting what you paid for the repair toward a replacement. Cracking out later is not proof of a bad repair: a fresh impact or a hard thermal swing can run a crack from a properly filled break. Ask what the warranty credits. See failed repair and redo.
What does a windshield replacement warranty cover?
Typically leaks, wind noise, moulding fit and workmanship for as long as you own the vehicle, plus stress cracks traced to the installation. It does not cover new rock damage. Get it in writing along with the invoice, the glass part number, the urethane used with its safe drive away time, and the calibration report. See warranty and what to expect.
