Four structural reasons categories differ
- Glass area and curvature. A windshield is float glass heated and bent to shape, then laminated. Larger panels and tighter compound curvature are harder to hold within optical tolerance, scrap rates are higher, and shipping breakage is higher. A steeply raked panoramic windshield is genuinely more expensive to manufacture than a flat truck screen of similar area.
- Production volume. Aftermarket glass makers tool up for parts they can sell in quantity. High volume vehicles get four or five competing suppliers and prices fall. Low volume vehicles get one supplier or none, and you are back to the dealer.
- The sensor stack. Every item mounted to or laminated into the glass adds part cost, and a forward facing camera adds a calibration procedure that is frequently the largest single line on the invoice. This is broken down in what drives the price.
- Dealer-only supply. When the only source is the vehicle manufacturer, there is no competitive pressure at all. This is common in the first one to three model years of any new vehicle, on HUD equipped glass, and on low volume and heavily featured models.

The crossover trap
The single most common price surprise in 2026 is the mid trim mainstream crossover. The vehicle cost $34,000 new, the driver mentally files it as an ordinary car, and the quote comes back at $1,050. The arithmetic is straightforward: about $650 for glass with a camera bracket, an acoustic interlayer and a rain sensor provision, about $100 for mouldings and supplies, and $300 for a dynamic calibration. Nothing on that invoice is padding.
What makes it worse is that the same model in a base trim, without the camera, is a $450 job. Two identical looking vehicles, a $600 gap. Why EV and HUD glass sits at the top
Two categories sit at the top of the table and it is worth understanding why, because the reasons are not arbitrary. Note what the HUD row does and does not include: $900 to $1,800 is the band for wedge glass and labor with a quality aftermarket or dealer equivalent part. EV windshields are large and steeply raked for aerodynamic reasons. A shallower rake angle means a longer glass panel with more compound curvature, which is harder to bend within optical spec and much easier to break in transit.
On top of that, EVs lean heavily on infrared reflective coatings, because cabin heating and cooling comes directly out of range, and on acoustic interlayers, because there is no engine noise to mask road and wind noise. Several manufacturers mount two or three cameras and sometimes a driver monitoring sensor to the same bracket assembly.
Add thin aftermarket supply on models only a few years old and you get $1,000 to $2,200 routinely for glass and labor, with genuinely scarce or low volume parts above that.
HUD glass is expensive for one precise reason. The wedge shaped PVB interlayer, thicker at the top of the glass than the bottom, exists to collapse the double reflection that ordinary parallel-surface laminated glass produces. Scarcity pricing on old and low volume vehicles
Price by vehicle age is a U shape. Years one to three: thin aftermarket supply, near dealer pricing. Years four to twelve: peak competition, cheapest. Beyond roughly fifteen to twenty years, or on any model that sold in small numbers, aftermarket tooling is retired and your options narrow to new old stock, small batch reproduction, or a used windshield from a salvage vehicle.
Three things change on scarce glass. Lead time goes from same day to weeks. Price stops correlating with complexity and starts correlating with availability, so a simple flat 1970s windshield can cost more than a modern one. And used glass becomes a reasonable option, with the caveat that a salvage windshield often carries pitting and sandblasting from years of highway use, which is a real optical problem in its own right, covered in pitting and glare.
Decision rule for scarce glass: if a replacement part has a lead time longer than a week or a price above $800 on a vehicle you intend to keep, treat any repairable chip as urgent. On scarce glass, preventing the crack is worth far more than the repair fee suggests.
Commercial vehicles: the downtime term
Vans and box trucks break the usual pattern because the glass is often the cheapest part of the problem. A box truck windshield is frequently flat or lightly curved, sometimes supplied in two pieces, and set in a rubber gasket rather than bonded, all of which keeps the part price down. What costs money is the vehicle standing still, plus regulatory exposure: cracks in the driver's view can put a commercial vehicle out of service at a roadside inspection.
That changes the decision rule rather than the price. For a commercial operator, a same day repair that keeps the vehicle working is worth more than the $80 to $200 it costs, and it is often worth paying a mobile fee to have it done in the yard. Consider also that upfitted vans with interior racking or bulkheads can need extra labor to reach the glass from inside, which some shops quote as an additional hour.
How to place your own vehicle
- Look behind the mirror. A large housing with one or more lenses means a camera, which means calibration, which means you are in a higher band than the badge suggests.
- Look at the lower corner markings. Acoustic labelling adds $40 to $150 and solar or IR labelling adds $50 to $200 on the part.
- Check for a HUD. Start the car in daylight and look for a projected display on the glass ahead of the wheel. If it is there, assume the top band.
- Check the model year. First to third year of a generation means limited aftermarket supply and higher pricing.
