Is a Cracked Windshield Dangerous?

Mechanism one: structure in a rollover
The windshield is a large, stiff, adhesively bonded panel across the front of the passenger cage. It stiffens the structure in torsion and helps the A-pillars and roof rail resist collapse when a roof is loaded. The defensible statement is that a bonded windshield is a load-carrying component whose contribution depends on an intact bond around the full perimeter.
That is why edge damage is the case to take seriously. Mechanism two: the passenger airbag backstop
On most vehicles the passenger airbag is a top-mount design: it fires upward from the dash, hits the inside of the windshield, and uses that surface to redirect and position itself before the occupant arrives. Deployment is complete in well under a tenth of a second, and the glass has to be there and still bonded for all of it.
A chip or a modest crack does not remove that reaction surface. Three things do: an edge crack severe enough to compromise retention, corrosion or contamination under the bond from a previous poor installation, and a fresh replacement driven before the urethane has reached handling strength. Mechanism three: vision, distortion and night glare
This is the mechanism you experience every day, and the one drivers most often dismiss. A crack is a mirror-finish fracture surface inside a transparent plate. In daylight it reads as a dark line. Against a headlight, a low sun or a wet road at night, it becomes a bright line with a halo, and the repaired or unrepaired chip at its origin scatters a starburst. Simple decision rule. If the damage is at the edge, through the inner ply, or larger than a dollar bill, plan replacement.
