Mobile Service vs In-Shop: Repair and Replacement
The short answer
- For a chip repair on a dry day between roughly 50 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, mobile service is close to equivalent to in-shop work, and the convenience is free.
- For a replacement on a vehicle with a forward facing camera, in-shop is usually the better choice, because static ADAS calibration needs a level floor, controlled lighting and target boards that do not travel well.
- Urethane cure depends on temperature and humidity. Cold, damp, or very dry conditions extend safe drive-away time, and a driveway gives the installer no control over any of it.
- Mobile and in-shop pricing is usually the same at the same shop. If mobile costs more, it is a travel fee, not better work; if it costs much less, ask what was left out.

Mobile service is not a lower tier of workmanship. It is the same technician doing the same job with less control over the environment. That distinction tells you exactly when to accept it: a chip repair in a mild dry parking lot is fine, and a camera-equipped replacement on a windy 34 degree morning is not.
What actually changes when the shop comes to you
Four physical variables move out of the technician's control the moment the work leaves the bay: air temperature, humidity, airborne contamination, and the flatness and lighting of the working surface. Everything else, tooling, glass quality, adhesive quality, skill, travels with the van. Judge any mobile job by asking which of those four variables your specific job depends on.

Chip repair: mobile is usually fine
A chip repair needs a clean dry break, a stable bridge mount, and glass in a workable temperature band. None of that requires a building. What it requires is a technician who will refuse bad conditions rather than push through them.
Rule for mobile repair. Accept it if the glass is dry, the break has not been rained on since it happened, the surface temperature is roughly 50 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and the car can be parked out of direct sun. Decline it if it is raining or snowing, if the glass is below about 40 degrees, or if the windshield is hot enough to be uncomfortable to touch. Two mobile-specific details worth watching.
- Moisture. A break that got wet needs to be dried, and a good tech carries a moisture evaporator or a heat source for exactly this. If the tech shrugs and injects anyway, the resin will not wet the fracture surface and the repair will read cloudy.
- Sun. Working in shade is not cosmetic preference, it is because ultraviolet in direct sunlight starts curing the resin before it has finished flowing into the legs. A van parked to shade the windshield, or a simple sun shield over the repair, is a sign the tech knows the trade.

Replacement: the calculus is different
A replacement is an adhesive bonding operation that contributes to the vehicle's structure. The windshield helps support the roof in a rollover and provides the backstop that lets the passenger airbag deploy against something. That bond is the reason conditions matter.
- Temperature. Most automotive urethanes are rated for application down to freezing or a little below, but cure slows sharply as it gets colder. Cold weather means a longer safe drive-away time, sometimes several hours instead of one.
- Humidity. Urethane cures by reacting with atmospheric moisture. Very dry air, common in winter and in the desert Southwest, slows the cure. Very wet conditions are a contamination problem instead, since water on the pinchweld or on the primer ruins adhesion.
- Wind. Wind is the underrated hazard. It blows grit into a fresh bead and onto primed metal, and it makes setting a large piece of glass genuinely dangerous for two people.
- Corrosion. Removing the old glass often reveals rust on the pinchweld. Correct practice is to treat it and prime it, which needs flash time and a controlled surface. A driveway in November is the wrong place to discover this.

The ADAS question decides most modern jobs
If a forward facing camera sits behind your windshield, the glass cannot simply be swapped and handed back. The camera must be recalibrated so that its idea of straight ahead matches the vehicle's.

Red flag. A mobile installer who says your camera "will relearn itself while you drive" without checking the vehicle's service procedure is guessing. Some vehicles do calibrate dynamically, many require a static procedure, and the difference is documented per model. Guessing about a lane keeping camera is not an acceptable answer.

Choose mobile when:
- It is a chip repair, the weather is mild, and the car can be shaded.
- It is a replacement on a vehicle with no camera behind the glass, the forecast is dry, and the temperature is comfortably above freezing.
- Your vehicle needs dynamic calibration only, and the tech confirms suitable roads nearby.
- You have a covered garage or carport with room to work.

Choose in-shop when:
- Your vehicle requires static calibration, or you do not yet know which type it requires.
- It is raining, snowing, below about 40 degrees, above about 95 degrees, or windy enough to move debris.
- The vehicle is older than roughly a decade or lives where roads are salted, so pinchweld rust is plausible.

One last practical point: whichever you pick, the shop's competence matters far more than the location. A careful mobile tech in a parking lot will outperform a careless shop with a nice building every time.
