Honda Sensing Calibration After a Windshield
The short answer

If your Honda has a camera housing bonded to the top of the windshield, the glass job is only half the work. That camera comes off with the old windshield and goes back on the new one in a slightly different place, and Honda Sensing has to be told where it is now looking. What makes Honda a little different from other brands is the split: the camera lives in the glass, but the radar that shares the work on many Sensing cars lives in the front of the car and a windshield never touches it.
What Honda Sensing is actually looking through
Honda Sensing is the umbrella name for the driver assistance bundle: collision mitigation braking, road departure mitigation, lane keeping assist and adaptive cruise control, plus traffic sign recognition and lane centering on some trims. Nearly all of it depends on a forward facing camera mounted high on the windshield behind the rearview mirror, looking out through a small clear window in the glass.
The camera does not measure distance with a beam. It infers geometry from what it sees, using a fixed assumption about how high it sits and what angle it points. Move the camera a fraction of a degree and every distance it reports moves with it, further out the road at longer range. Honda has changed the hardware more than once. Earlier Sensing cars pair the windshield camera with a millimeter wave radar low in the front end. On several recent redesigns Honda consolidated to a single wide angle camera and dropped that separate front radar, and Honda Sensing 360 adds corner radar units around the vehicle for cross traffic and blind spot coverage. The camera and the radar are two separate aims
This is the single most useful thing to understand before you read a Honda quote. A windshield replacement disturbs exactly one sensor. Everything else on the car keeps its aim.

So if a quote for a plain glass replacement carries a radar aiming charge, ask what it is for. The honest answer is usually that the shop bundles a single ADAS line item and has not itemized it, but you are entitled to see what you are buying, itemized.
Targets in a bay, a road drive, or both
Honda camera aiming is generally a target based procedure. The car is set up on level ground, a printed target is placed ahead of it at the position the service information specifies, and a scan tool walks the camera module through the routine while it looks at the target. Some models add a confirmation drive afterward, and the requirement varies by model, model year and camera hardware.
Do not let anyone tell you on the phone which one your car takes. The service procedure for your VIN governs, and it is the shop's job to look it up rather than to assume. Target based work has physical prerequisites that a driveway cannot meet: a floor flat and level within a tight tolerance, clear space ahead of the vehicle, even lighting with no sun or reflections on the target, correct tire pressures, no cargo or passengers, and a centered steering wheel. Why Honda cameras are fussy about the glass
Honda has a reputation among glass technicians for being sensitive to which windshield goes in. The mechanism is not mysterious, and it has two halves.
- The bracket is part of the glass, not part of the car. The camera mount is bonded to the windshield by whoever made the windshield. Position tolerance on that bond is small but never zero, and rotation matters far more than height: a bracket set a fraction of a degree off aims the camera at a point that drifts further from the truth the further away it looks. - The camera looks through the laminate. The glass in front of the lens is an optical element. Thickness, curvature and the wedge of the interlayer all bend the image slightly, and the camera was aimed on the assumption of a particular set of optics. Variation inside the camera window is the reason a calibration can fail three times in a row on a bay that calibrated four other cars that morning.
Both halves are quality control questions rather than brand loyalty questions. Good aftermarket glass calibrates fine, and shops do it every day. What shops report is a higher retry rate on some brands than others, and Honda comes up in that conversation more often than average. If it fails twice, stop paying for attempts. A repeated failure on a car that has not been crashed is usually the glass or the setup, not the technician. Ask directly whether the shop wants to try a different windshield before booking a third attempt, and ask who absorbs that cost. What a Honda dealer does that a general shop may not
A Honda dealer brings four things that not every glass shop has: the factory scan tool with a current subscription to Honda service information, the factory target set for the aiming procedure, the service bulletins that apply to your exact VIN, and a parts counter that can order the exact factory windshield with the right bracket. That last one matters more on Honda than the tooling does.
What a dealer does not automatically bring is glass skill. Many dealers sublet the actual glass replacement to a glass company and keep only the calibration. So the real question is not dealer or independent, it is who owns the outcome if the systems misbehave next month. Ask it in exactly those words. The pattern is consistent across the range, and the differences are mostly about how much the glass itself costs and how trim dependent the camera is.

What to settle before you hand over the keys
- Confirm the camera is there. Look behind the mirror. A forward facing lens in a bonded housing means calibration is part of the job and belongs in the written quote.
- Ask which procedure your VIN calls for and who performs it. A specific answer, naming a bay or a named sublet partner, is a good sign. A vague answer is the whole review.
- Ask what glass is going in, factory or aftermarket, and what happens if the calibration will not complete on it.
- Ask for the pre-scan and post-scan and the calibration record with your VIN, the systems addressed and the date on it. That paper is what settles an argument years later if a system ever misbehaves.
- Do not accept a clean dash as proof. A camera can be confidently wrong without setting a single warning light, so ask what was measured, not whether a light came on.
