Subaru EyeSight Calibration After a Windshield

EyeSight sees the road with two cameras, not one, mounted at the top of the windshield on either side of the mirror. Replacing the glass moves both of them and can slightly change the relationship between them, so Subaru requires a recalibration every time. That stereo design is also why EyeSight cars have a reputation for being fussy about glass: a single camera system only has to be aimed correctly, while a stereo pair has to be aimed correctly and agree with itself.

How a stereo pair measures the road

A single forward camera does not measure distance directly. It infers it, from the known height and angle of the camera and from where objects meet the road plane in the image. EyeSight works differently. The two lenses sit a fixed distance apart on a shared mounting, so the same object appears in slightly different places in the two images. That difference, the disparity, is what the module turns into a distance, in the same way your own two eyes give you depth that one eye cannot.

Two consequences follow, and they explain nearly everything about calibrating these cars.

  • The separation between the cameras is a measuring instrument. The software assumes a specific geometry between the two lenses. Anything that changes the relative angle between them, even slightly, changes every distance the system computes.
  • Errors grow with distance. Disparity shrinks as objects get further away, so a small angular disagreement between the two cameras matters least at bumper range and most at the far end of the field, which is exactly where adaptive cruise decides how hard to slow and where pre-collision braking decides whether anything is about to happen.

This is a difference of kind, not just degree, from the single camera geometry described in ADAS recalibration explained. On a single camera vehicle a calibration re-establishes one relationship, the camera to the car. On a stereo pair it has to re-establish that plus the relationship between the two lenses.

Why the windshield is part of the instrument

Each camera looks through its own patch of glass, so an EyeSight windshield has two viewports instead of one, and both have to be optically clean in the small area the lens uses. This is where the mechanism gets specific. On a single camera, local distortion in the glass biases the image the same way for the whole frame, and calibration can absorb some of that as an aiming offset. On a stereo pair, distortion in one viewport that is not matched in the other shifts the disparity between the two images, and disparity is the raw material of the distance calculation. The result is a system that can pass a target-based check and still misjudge closing speed on the road.

The bracket assembly matters twice over for the same reason. It holds both cameras, so its bond position sets the aim of both, and any rotation of the assembly rotates both lenses together while the software still expects the original geometry. What the calibration involves

Subaru publishes the procedure and the shop follows it for your specific VIN, because it has changed across EyeSight generations and continues to. In broad terms, expect a target-based static procedure performed indoors with the vehicle set up precisely, and on some model years a road portion as well, either as a confirmation drive or as part of the routine. Ask the shop which one applies to your car rather than assuming, and read static against dynamic calibration if the distinction is new to you.

The preconditions are ordinary but unforgiving:

  1. A level floor and a clear, controlled space. Static work on a stereo system is not the place to improvise, and most driveways cannot meet the specification.
  2. The car at reference ride height. Correct tire pressures, nothing in the trunk, no roof load, nobody sitting in it, fuel level as the procedure states.
  3. The vehicle squared to the target off its thrust line. A rear alignment that is off sends the camera pair looking at a target that is square to the wrong reference.
  4. Steering centered and battery supported. A charger on the car matters on a procedure that can run over an hour with modules awake.
  5. A scan tool that runs the routine and documents it. Capable aftermarket systems handle EyeSight, and plenty of shops send these to the dealer instead, which is a legitimate choice rather than an admission of anything. Budget accordingly. A stereo procedure is more setup-intensive than a single camera dynamic drive, so the calibration line on an EyeSight job tends to sit at the upper end of the usual $150 to $400 band and can run higher when a dealer performs it. The reputation aftermarket glass has on these cars

Here is the even-handed version. EyeSight vehicles are among the cars most often mentioned when shops talk about calibrations that will not complete, and many shops have a standing policy of quoting OEM or dealer equivalent glass on them. That policy is defensible, and the reason is structural rather than a judgment about any manufacturer: two viewports have to be right instead of one, a shared assembly has to hold two camera seats in relation to each other, and the cost of getting it wrong is a second windshield plus a second calibration on a procedure that is already at the expensive end.

What that does not mean is that non-OEM glass fails on these cars as a rule. Premium aftermarket windshields calibrate on EyeSight vehicles routinely, and shops that buy carefully report few problems. Failures cluster by part number and production run rather than tidily by brand, which is why one shop's experience of a supplier can be excellent while another shop's is poor with neither one exaggerating. A reasonable position to take with your shop. Ask which manufacturer and part number they are ordering, whether they have calibrated that exact part on an EyeSight car before, and what happens if it does not complete. If the answer to the second question is no and the answer to the third is vague, paying up a tier is cheap insurance on this particular vehicle. If they have a recent track record with the part, that is real information and worth trusting.

Three questions, asked before the glass is ordered, prevent nearly every bad outcome on these cars: which glass by manufacturer and part number, where and how the calibration will be performed and by whom, and what happens if it does not complete. Get the last one as a sentence you can point to later rather than a reassurance at the counter.

Not for long. A brief unavailable message while the vehicle initializes on the first drive can be ordinary. A message that returns at every startup means the calibration did not complete or a fault is stored. Take it back to the installing shop, ask for the calibration report and a post-scan, and do not accept codes being cleared as a fix.

Do the cameras need calibration if the glass was not replaced?

Any time the cameras or their mounting are removed and refitted, the aim has to be re-established. That includes work behind the mirror, a mounting assembly disturbed during another repair, and some suspension or alignment jobs that change the vehicle's reference. If a technician unclipped anything up there, ask what the service procedure requires.

Why is my Subaru windshield quote higher than my neighbor's for a similar car?
