Subaru Forester Windshield Replacement

Why an upright windshield collects damage differently
The Forester has one of the more vertical windshields in its class, which is a styling and visibility choice with a side effect. A stone striking a steeply raked panel at 60 mph arrives at a shallow angle and often skates off, spending part of its energy sliding rather than digging. The same stone hitting a near vertical panel arrives closer to square, and more of that energy goes into the glass at the point of contact.
In practice that means Foresters tend to collect deeper pits and cleaner impact craters rather than long grazes, and a higher share of those impacts land in the middle band of the glass where you look. Two things follow from it:

The panel is also physically large for a compact crossover because of the tall, upright greenhouse. That drives freight breakage and stock levels rather than the glass price itself, so lead times on a less common variant can be longer than you expect.
Your Forester probably has a de-icer, not a heated windshield
This is the single most common ordering mistake on this vehicle. Subaru's cold weather feature is a wiper de-icer: a set of fine heating lines embedded in the bottom few inches of the glass, in the area where the wiper blades park, fed by a connector at one lower corner. It exists to melt the ice that welds blades to the glass overnight. It does not heat the whole windshield, it does not clear your view, and it is a different part number from the same windshield without it.
A full heated windshield, with an element or a conductive coating across the entire viewing area, is a different technology found on a handful of other manufacturers. Check for the de-icer yourself before you approve any quote. Lift the wipers and look at the bottom two to three inches of the glass in good light for fine horizontal lines, then look for a small connector tab at a lower corner. Do this before you call anyone. It takes longer to describe than to perform, and it prevents both the wrong part and the surprise line item.

The 2019 split, and why it decides your quote
Foresters divide cleanly at the 2019 redesign. On 2014 through 2018 cars, EyeSight was an option tied to certain trims and the automatic transmission, so two identical looking Foresters from the same year can be a $400 job and a $900 job. On 2019 and newer cars, EyeSight is effectively standard equipment across the US range, so assume calibration applies and treat any quote that omits it as incomplete rather than cheap.

Doing this job in a cold climate
Half of all Foresters seem to need glass in February, and cold changes the job in ways that are worth planning around rather than arguing about afterward.
- Adhesive cure slows down as the temperature drops. Safe drive away time comes from the adhesive manufacturer's chart for the actual temperature and humidity, not from a fixed hour. - The pinch weld has to be dry and above the adhesive's minimum temperature. - The calibration bay has its own requirements. Target work needs an indoor floor and controlled lighting regardless of the season. Where a road portion is part of the procedure, snow covered lane markings and low winter sun can postpone it, so a shop may hold the car or ask you to return.

The Forester specific failures
- De-icer left unplugged. The glass is correct, the connector at the lower corner never went back on, and nobody notices until the first hard frost. Test it before the shop closes: switch the de-icer on and feel the wiper park area after a few minutes.
- De-icer deleted by substitution. A cheaper part without the element gets fitted because the quote was built from the model year rather than from the car. Irreversible without another replacement.
- Cowl clips broken on removal. The plastic cowl below the glass gets brittle with age and cold. Broken clips produce a rattle and a water path. Ask that they be replaced rather than reused, as covered in mouldings, clips and the cowl panel.
- Calibration deferred and forgotten. When the road portion of a procedure is postponed for weather, it needs to be scheduled, not assumed. Get the completed calibration report in writing before the file closes.
- Wiper arms reinstalled in the wrong position. Blades that clip the trim or park high on new glass are a fitting error, not a wear item.

Establish three things on the phone: whether the quote includes EyeSight calibration, whether the glass they are ordering has the wiper de-icer if your current glass does, and where the calibration will be performed. Ask for the job to be done indoors if the daytime high is near or below freezing, and expect to leave the car longer than a summer appointment would take.
