Work these four sources in sequence. Each one catches errors the previous one misses, and you can stop as soon as two independent sources agree.
- The VIN itself. Seventeen characters, on a plate at the base of the windshield on the driver's side, on the door jamb label, and on your registration and insurance card. Read it out in full, including the last eight characters, which are the ones that identify your individual vehicle. Never give a shop just the year, make and trim.
- The window sticker. The original label lists factory packages by name: driver assistance, cold weather (where a heated wiper park usually lives), audio or quiet packages, and any head-up display. What a good parts call sounds like. You give the full VIN. Check the glass before the urethane goes on
You get one easy chance to catch a wrong part, and it lasts until the bead is laid. After that, fixing a mistake means a second cut out, a second set of mouldings and, on a camera car, a second calibration. Ask to see the new glass first and spend five minutes on it:
- Compare the markings block against your photo. The maker will usually differ. The feature words should not.
- Count the windows in the black printed border. Camera aperture, rain sensor pad location, transponder patch. Every device on your old glass needs a matching opening on the new one.
