Reading the Markings in the Corner of Your Windshield
The short answer
- The corner block, called the bug, is a federal certification marking fired into the glass. If it is a sticker or peels off, it is not a compliance mark.
- Only two items in it carry regulatory meaning: the DOT number identifying the manufacturer, and the AS class. A windshield must read AS1 and must say laminated.

Where the markings are and what they are called
The stack of print is called the bug or the monogram, and every piece of glazing legally sold for road use in the United States carries one. On a windshield it usually sits in a lower corner, most often the passenger side, occasionally higher up behind the mirror. On door glass it is printed in a bottom corner and is often swallowed by the door with the window up, so drop the window three or four inches to read it. On back glass, look in a lower corner and expect the defroster busbar or trim to crowd it.
It is printed in ceramic ink and fired into the surface during the same heat cycle that bends or tempers the glass, which is why it never washes off and never peels. That permanence is the point: the federal glazing rule requires each piece to be certified with a durable marking, so the bug is a compliance label first and a brand label second. No two manufacturers lay the block out the same way and few parts carry every element, so read it as a set of items that may appear in any order rather than a fixed form.

One habit is worth building. The DOT number and the AS designation are the two items with regulatory meaning. Everything else in the block is the manufacturer describing its own product, which is useful but not binding.
The AS number is the line that carries legal weight
AS1 is laminated glazing that passes the highest optical class and transmits at least 70 percent of visible light, and it is permitted in any opening in the vehicle. AS2 is generally tempered glazing at the same transmittance, fine for side and rear openings but not for a windshield. AS3 falls below that transmittance and is allowed only where driving vision is not required, which is why privacy glass in the back of an SUV carries it.
So a windshield must read AS1, and every legal replacement windshield does, whatever it cost. Two markings that should stop the conversation. A windshield that reads AS2 or AS3, or that reads TEMPERED rather than laminated, is the wrong glazing for the opening. So is a corner block that turns out to be a sticker or a printed film rather than fired ceramic ink you cannot scratch off with a fingernail. Reading the date indicator without over-reading it
Most makers encode the month with dots and print the year as two digits beside them. The usual pattern is that the number of dots gives the month, and their position relative to the year separates the first half of the year from the second, so one to six dots on each side covers twelve months. Some makers use an arrow or an underline instead, and some print nothing at all.
Because the scheme is a convention rather than a requirement, do not build an argument on an absolute reading of it. Read it comparatively. What is reliable is whether the windshield's date indicator sits in the same window as those on the door and back glass, and whether that window falls shortly before the vehicle build date on the door jamb certification label. The five minute driveway check
Do this in daylight with a phone. You are building a small table, and the table is what makes the conclusion obvious.
- Photograph the windshield bug. Check both lower corners, shoot close enough to zoom into later, and shoot from outside, since most bugs read correctly from the outside face.
- Write down four things. Maker, AS number, DOT number, date indicator. Skip anything you cannot read confidently rather than guessing at it.
- Do every other window. Both front doors, both rear doors, any quarter glass and the back glass, dropping each one a few inches so the bottom corner clears the belt line.
- Read the door jamb label. The certification label on the driver's door or pillar carries the vehicle's build month and year, which is your reference point.
- Compare, do not decode. Line up the makers, then the dates, and look for the odd one out rather than an exact manufacturing date.
- Keep the photos. If you later replace a piece of glass, a photo of the original marking settles any argument about what was on the car.

The inference this check makes easiest is the one people want most: whether a used car has had its windshield out. What the markings cannot tell you
- Optical quality. AS1 says the construction passed the optical class in testing. It does not tell you whether this piece has visible waviness in your line of sight, which you check yourself using the method in how to test a windshield for distortion.
- Which interlayer is inside. Some makers add an acoustic or solar callout, many do not, so verify the quiet layer against the build sheet instead.
- Whether the brackets are in the right place. Camera and rain sensor bracket position is the most consequential difference between two parts for a modern car, and nothing in the bug reports it.
- The tier of the part. The automaker's logo identifies an OEM branded part, but its absence covers everything from the identical part sold plain to the cheapest thing in the catalog, a distinction drawn in OEM, dealer equivalent and aftermarket glass.
Using this before you pay
The highest value moment for this check is not the driveway, it is standing beside a newly installed windshield with the invoice in your hand. Confirm AS1, confirm it says laminated, confirm the maker matches what was quoted, and photograph it. Probably, especially if the date indicator is much later than the rest of the glass. Cars normally leave the factory with glazing from one supplier made within a few months of the build date. The exception is a different DOT number with the same brand name, which usually just means a second plant of the same company supplied that piece.
Is a windshield with no marking in the corner legal?
Road glazing has to be permanently certified, so a genuine windshield has the marking somewhere. Before concluding anything, check both lower corners, the top center behind the mirror, and whether trim or a sun shade is covering it.
