What a Shop Needs to Calibrate Your Car

A calibration is a measurement job, and it needs five things that a glass shop does not otherwise own: manufacturer-specific targets and a frame to hold them square to the car, a way of positioning that frame off the vehicle's thrust line rather than its bodywork, a scan tool that can drive the calibration routine on your make, a live subscription to the maker's service procedures, and a room that meets the specification. Miss any one of the five and the work cannot be done properly or documented honestly, which is exactly why a lot of competent glass shops send this part of the job somewhere else.

The five requirements, and what each one is for

  • Targets and a target frame. Static procedures use printed patterns of a defined size, held at a defined height and distance, square to the car. Targets are vehicle specific and revised over time. A shop covering many makes carries either a large printed set or a digital target screen, plus a frame that is stable, adjustable and repeatable.
  • A positioning system. The frame has to be placed relative to the vehicle's thrust line, the direction the rear axle actually points, not the centerline of the body. This is done with wheel clamps and lasers, or with a camera-based measuring system. Placing targets by tape measure off a bumper is where a lot of quiet errors come from, because a car with a slightly crooked rear axle aims its camera at a target that is square to the wrong reference.
  • A scan tool that covers your make properly. The tool has to enter the calibration routine, not just read fault codes. Coverage varies by brand and by model year, and a tool that handles most of the market can still be locked out of one system.
  • A current subscription to the manufacturer's procedure. Target distances, heights, preconditions and pass criteria are published by the automaker and revised. A shop working from a printout somebody saved two years ago is working from a document that may have changed.
  • A room that meets the spec. Level floor, enough clear length and width, controlled light, nothing reflective behind the target. This is the requirement most often quietly ignored, and the cheapest one to get wrong.

Add it up and a genuinely multi-brand static bay is a serious investment before the first car drives in. A shop that performs three calibrations a week cannot justify it. A shop performing thirty can. That single arithmetic fact explains most of what you will hear from shops about who does this work.

Why the room decides more than the equipment

Floor flatness is the requirement that disqualifies the most sites, and it is not about looking level. Manufacturers specify flatness across the whole working area, typically as a small fraction of an inch of deviation, because a slope tilts the car and therefore tilts the camera relative to the target. Ordinary shop floors are built with a crown and a fall toward a drain so that water runs away. That is good building practice and bad calibration practice, and it is why a bay that has washed cars for thirty years can be unusable without a leveled pad.

Space is the second constraint. Static setups need clear length in front of the vehicle for the target, room either side, and space behind to roll the car straight without repositioning. Planning figures around 25 to 30 feet of length and 15 to 20 feet of width are commonly quoted, and specific procedures ask for more. Light is the third: even, diffuse lighting, no sun through a roller door onto the target, no polished tool box or window glass behind it throwing a reflection the camera reads as a second pattern.

Two more preconditions belong to the car rather than the room, and a good shop treats them as part of the setup: correct tire pressures with the vehicle unladen, and a battery maintainer so voltage does not sag during a routine that can run over an hour. The single most useful question you can ask. "Where is the calibration performed, and is that bay level and used only for calibration during the procedure?" A shop with a real setup answers immediately and will usually offer to show you. A shop that pushes the vehicle into whichever stall is free is telling you something without meaning to.

OEM software, aftermarket tools and where the line falls

High-end aftermarket scan tools cover a wide range of makes and complete most calibrations correctly. The line falls in three places. Some makes require the automaker's own software, sometimes with an online authorization for each vehicle, to finish the routine or to write the result. Some very new model years lag in aftermarket coverage until the tool maker releases an update. And some systems need a related procedure the tool must also support, such as a steering angle sensor reset or a rear radar alignment done in the correct sequence.

What matters to you is not the brand of tool but whether the shop can complete and document the specific routine for your VIN. Ask directly: "Do you calibrate my make in house, or does it go out?" A truthful "we sublet all of those" is a better answer than a vague yes. Whether a chain or an independent is more likely to have the equipment is a genuine trade-off rather than a rule, covered in chains against independent shops.

Why good shops sublet, and why that is fine

Subletting means your installer performs the glass work and sends the calibration to a specialist: a mobile calibration company, a dedicated calibration center, or the franchise dealer. It is normal, it is often the higher quality path, and it says nothing bad about the installer. A specialist bay that runs calibrations all day has current subscriptions, a floor built for the job, and technicians who have seen your vehicle's routine many times.

What you should insist on is that the accountability stays in one place:

  1. One invoice and one point of responsibility. Your contract is with the installing shop. If the system misbehaves afterward, you go back to them, and they deal with their subcontractor.
  2. The calibration report comes back to you, not just to them. It should name the vehicle and VIN, the procedure performed, the equipment and software version, the date and a pass result, with pre-scan and post-scan code lists.
  3. Ask who transports the car and how far. A vehicle driven across town on fresh urethane before it has reached safe drive away time is a different risk, and the drive itself can serve as the dynamic portion on some vehicles if it is done to procedure.
  4. Confirm the warranty covers the calibration, not only the glass. Get it in writing that a failed or drifting calibration is their problem to resolve.

What can and cannot be done in your driveway

Dynamic procedures travel well. They need a scan tool, a technician and a stretch of road with clear markings in decent weather, so they can start from your office parking lot as easily as from a bay. Static procedures do not travel well, but they are not impossible either: portable frames exist, and a mobile calibration operator working on a level surface with controlled light and enough clear space can run a legitimate static procedure. The site is the variable, not the van.

What a driveway almost never provides is the flatness and the clear distance. A sloped drive, a garage with a fall to the street, or a curbside space with traffic and reflections behind the target all fail the specification, and the honest answer from a mobile operator is that the car needs to come in. How to use this when you are choosing

You are not shopping for equipment, you are shopping for a documented result. Ask where the calibration happens, whether that bay is level and dedicated, which procedure your vehicle needs, what the report will contain, and who fixes it if it fails. A shop that answers those five without hedging is equipped, whether the gear is theirs or their partner's. Frequently asked questions

Is mobile ADAS calibration legitimate?

It can be, and the site decides. A dynamic procedure only needs a scan tool and suitable roads, so a van is fine. A static procedure needs a level, clear, light-controlled surface, which portable frames can serve in a warehouse or a flat lot but rarely in a residential driveway. Ask where the operator intends to set up before booking.

Does my car have to go to the dealer for calibration?

How can I judge whether a calibration bay is good enough?
