There is a cabin facing camera above the mirror on Model 3 and Model Y, which on most builds is carried in the headliner trim rather than bonded to the glass. And the pillar and repeater cameras that feed lane change and parking functions are mounted on the body, on the B pillars and in the front fenders, so a windshield job does not touch them.

The important structural point is what is missing. Tesla moved its vehicles to camera only sensing, and on the cars built that way there is no forward radar picking up the slack behind the front bumper. What the process wants is unremarkable driving on roads it can read: clear painted lane lines, reasonable daylight or good headlight conditions, steady speeds, gentle curves, and traffic that is not stop and go. Tesla's own guidance has generally described calibration as completing within the first twenty odd miles of suitable driving, while being explicit that it can take considerably longer. Treat any number you are given as a typical case rather than a promise, and treat the progress display in the car as the authority.

What slows it down is anything that degrades the view or the road model: heavy rain or snow, lane markings worn to nothing, a construction zone with conflicting lines, tight urban driving that never settles into a steady speed, a dirty or smeared camera window, or a shroud that was refitted slightly out of position. Overnight city commuting can leave a car stuck for days while one highway run would have finished it.

Your invoice may show no calibration line, and that can be correct. On a Tesla, the recalibration is performed by the vehicle rather than by the shop, so a replacement quote that lists glass, adhesive, moldings and labor without a separate calibration charge is not necessarily incomplete. What you should still expect is that the shop resets the calibration deliberately, tells you the Autopilot features will be unavailable until you have driven, and shows you where the progress screen is. The exact wording moves with software versions, so read this as a guide to categories of message rather than a script. Tesla Service or an independent shop, honestly

Both routes are real, and the trade is not the one people assume.

An independent glass shop can replace a Tesla windshield. The glass is available through the aftermarket as well as through Tesla, the installation is a conventional bonded windshield job, and because the car calibrates itself there is no factory target set that an independent is locked out of. Tesla also publishes service information and sells diagnostic access on a subscription basis, which puts a well equipped independent in a better position on these cars than on some brands where the calibration routine is effectively dealer only. Independents are often materially cheaper and can usually see you sooner.

What Tesla Service has is the ability to end a problem. If the calibration will not complete, if the camera housing or its bracket is damaged or suspect, if a fault code sits in the camera module, or if the car needs a camera or a bracket replaced rather than re-aimed, that is where the job finishes. Tesla also runs mobile service for some work, which can save you a visit. The honest summary is that an independent is a reasonable first choice for the glass itself, and Tesla is the right call the moment the car will not calibrate.

Cost follows the same split. A Model 3 or Model Y windshield commonly lands in the several hundred to well over a thousand dollar range depending on the glass specification and who fits it, with Model S and Model X higher, and with no separate calibration line in most cases. What to settle before you hand over the keys

  • Who is transferring the camera housing and shroud. The housing has to sit flush in its bracket with the shroud closed against the glass.
