Windshield scratches: what can be polished out and what cannot

The short answer

  • Nothing fills a scratch. Repair resin needs a fracture cavity, and a scratch is a groove with no cavity and no legs to run into.
  • The fingernail test decides everything: if your nail glides over the line, polishing may work. If it drops into the groove, polishing will not remove it without ruining the optics.
  • Cerium oxide polishing removes glass. It lowers the surface around the scratch down to the scratch floor, which is why overdoing it leaves a shallow lens and visible distortion.
  • A scratch in the driver's primary viewing area is judged by a different standard than the same scratch near the edge, and that is the zone you should never let anyone polish aggressively.
  • Most windshield scratches are self-inflicted: a worn blade, a torn insert, dry wiping, or a scraper dragged through grit.

A windshield scratch is a groove cut into the outer glass surface, not a fracture, so nothing can be injected into it. Two questions decide what you can do: how deep it is, which your fingernail answers in ten seconds, and where it sits, because a faint line in front of the driver is a bigger problem than a deep one out at the passenger edge. Polishing is real, but it works by removing glass, and that is exactly why it can make the view worse.

A scratch is not pitting, and not a chip

Three surface problems get confused constantly, and each has a different answer.

  • A scratch is a single line or a small group of lines with direction. Something harder than the glass, or something dragging something harder, was moved across the surface.
  • Pitting is thousands of tiny craters with no direction, spread over the lower swept area, and it shows up as night glare rather than a visible mark. It is covered in full at pitting and glare and it is a replacement item, not a polishing item.
  • A chip is a fracture: a pit with a cone under it, legs, or a star. That is the only one of the three that resin repairs. Check it against what can and cannot be repaired.

Telling the scratch types apart

Shape and position tell you what made a scratch, and that predicts its depth before you touch the glass.

The razor case deserves a note. A blade used flat, wet and in one direction rarely marks glass. Damage comes from a corner catching, from dry scraping, or from grit under the edge. Where a decal came off, check first that the line is not adhesive residue, which smears when rubbed.

The fingernail test and what depth means

Clean and dry the area. Drag a fingernail slowly across the scratch at right angles, not along it, at several points, because depth varies along a scratch.

  1. Nothing catches at all. The scratch is in the outer surface only. A specialist polish has a good chance, and in the driver's view it may be smarter to leave it alone.
  2. A faint tick, but the nail rides over. Borderline. Polishing may reduce it to invisible in daylight and still leave a visible line at night against headlights.
  3. The nail drops in and stops against a wall. Beyond polishing. Removing it means lowering the surrounding glass to that depth, and the optical price is worse than the scratch.
  4. The nail catches at a single point rather than a line. That is not a scratch, that is an impact. Treat it as a chip.

Check both faces. Interior scratches come from cargo and seat belt buckles, and they polish more predictably: no wiper wear on that side, no weather.

How cerium oxide polishing actually works

Cerium oxide is a very fine abrasive that also reacts chemically with the hydrated silica at a glass surface, so it works as a chemical and mechanical polish rather than pure sanding. On a wet felt pad under a machine, it removes glass in very small increments.

That last part is the whole story. Polishing does not fill the scratch and cannot. It lowers the surface around the scratch until the surface meets the bottom of the groove. The scratch is gone because the glass that surrounded it is gone.

So the removal has to be spread out. Take material only along the line and you cut a shallow trench, and a trench in a transparent plate refracts. Spread the same removal over a blend area many times wider than the scratch and the change in curvature per inch stays below what your eye resolves.

The failure mode is a lens, not a haze. A dished polish makes objects shift and ripple as they cross the patch. Distortion is steady and always present, which makes it more objectionable than the thin line it replaced, and a head-up display projected onto a polished patch ghosts and blurs.

There is a second hazard. A dry or overloaded pad builds heat fast in one spot, and a hot spot next to cold glass is glass under stress. Polishing has cracked windshields. A competent operator keeps the surface flooded, the pad moving, and the passes short.

The practical working limit

Shops that do this well operate inside boundaries roughly like these, and they are craft practice rather than a published specification.

Note what is absent: a number in thousandths. Nobody measures scratch depth on an installed windshield, which is why the fingernail rule survives. Judge by feel and position, and stop early.

Why position changes the answer

A windshield is an optically controlled part, tested for light transmittance and optical deviation under the glazing specification described at the standards behind windshield work. Hand polishing steps outside that control.

The driver's primary viewing area is the zone treated seriously by inspectors and by most state obstruction provisions. What that zone is, how the AS-1 line marks its upper boundary, and how it is measured are covered at the AS-1 line and the driver's critical viewing area. Inside it, tolerate a faint line rather than accept a polished dish.

Out at the edges the calculus flips. Distortion at the far passenger corner or below the wiper park line costs you nothing you use, so polishing is a reasonable gamble there. One exception: stay well clear of the camera window and sensor bracket. A distorted patch in front of a forward facing camera is a fault you cannot see and it cannot report.

Preventing the next one

Nearly all wiper scratches are avoidable, and the habits are cheap.

  • Replace blades every six to twelve months, and immediately on a torn edge or new chatter.
  • Never run wipers on dry glass. Wet with washer fluid first, and keep the reservoir full year round.
  • Clear grit and leaf debris off the glass and out of the cowl by hand before the first sweep after parking under trees or on a dirt road.
  • Never use wipers to clear frost, snow or ice. That presses a metal carrier onto abrasive ice.
  • Use a plastic scraper with an unnicked edge, run the defroster first, push in one direction instead of sawing, and lift and reposition rather than grinding through hard spots.
  • Retire a scraper once its edge is chipped, and never store it loose where it collects grit.
  • Skip brush-style automatic washes, and never dry-wipe glass with a paper towel.

The money question

A specialist scratch polish on a small isolated line commonly runs in the low hundreds, and an honest shop tells you up front that the result may be improvement rather than removal. Set that against 2026 national replacement ranges: roughly $250 to $450 basic with no camera, $450 to $900 for a mainstream vehicle with a forward facing camera, and $900 to $1,800 for a luxury or head-up display windshield before any OEM uplift.

Calibration is the extra line that changes the math. Where a camera is involved, add roughly $150 to $350 for a dynamic calibration, $250 to $600 for a static one, and $400 to $800 where the vehicle needs both. Those are typical market ranges, not measured figures, and replacement cost breaks down what moves them.

The decision rule is simple. Pay for a polish only when the nail test comes out in your favour and a shop will look at the car first. Do not buy a polish for a deep scratch inside the driver's view, because you will likely pay for the replacement afterward anyway. If the glass also carries a chip, a crack or heavy pitting, read when replacement is required instead: you pay the labor once.

How deep can a scratch be and still polish out?

Why did my wiper suddenly start scratching the glass?
