1. The chip hunt in raking light (60 seconds)
What you do. Stand at a front corner and drop your eye until it is nearly level with the glass. Sight across the surface toward a light so the light grazes it rather than passing through. Sweep side to side in three horizontal bands, repeat from the other corner, then finish from the driver's seat looking out.

2. The wiper blade squeeze test (45 seconds)

3. Washer aim and spray pattern (30 seconds)
What you do. Run the washers for one cycle and watch where the fluid lands. Both jets should put a fan into the upper middle of the swept area, high enough that the first wipe carries it down across the whole sweep, and neither should throw a single hard stream.
Why it works. Dry wiping is the fastest way to abrade a windshield, and the usual reason a driver dry wipes is that the washers did not deliver. A nozzle aimed too low wets the cowl, one aimed too high sends fluid over the roof at speed, and a clogged one throws a stream the blade smears rather than a film it can float on.

4. Moulding and edge check (60 seconds)
What you do. Run a fingertip along the top moulding and down both sides, and look hard at the corners. You want lifted or wavy trim, gaps where the rubber has shrunk back, chalky or cracked rubber, and any brown staining or bubbling paint under the edge of the glass. Check that the cowl panel at the base is still clipped down.
Why it works. The perimeter is the highest stress region of the panel and the place water gets trapped. Lifted trim lets water sit against the bond line, and on an older or previously replaced windshield that is where rust starts. 5. The water and wind check (60 seconds, or quarterly)
What you do. Press the carpet in both front footwells and the headliner just inside the A pillars, and smell the cabin. Damp carpet, a musty smell or a stained headliner corner is a leak until proven otherwise. To confirm, have someone sit inside with a flashlight and a dry paper towel along the top and sides of the glass while you run a hose, no nozzle, low flow, upward from the base of the windshield, a minute per section.
Why it works. Water finds the low point, so a leak at a top corner usually shows up as a wet footwell two feet away and gets blamed on something else. Low flow water working upward reproduces the way rain reaches a seal. A pressure washer does not: it forces water past sound seals and gives you a false positive.
What to do. Note where it wets first, then work through water leak diagnosis. If the glass was replaced recently, a leak or a new whistle at highway speed is a warranty matter and the shop should take it back.
6. Inside surface and night view (45 seconds)
What you do. Wipe a knuckle across the inside of the glass and look at the streak it leaves. Check the small clear window ahead of the mirror where the forward camera and rain sensor look out, and confirm nothing has been stuck in front of it. Then answer one question about your last night drive: were oncoming headlights throwing halos you did not used to see?
Why it works. The film that builds on the inside face comes from cabin plastics, and it scatters light much the way surface wear does, so drivers regularly conclude the glass is worn out when it only needs cleaning.
