A defrost sequence for a freezing morning
This takes no longer than what most drivers already do, because the heater core cannot produce warm air until the engine has run for a few minutes regardless of where you set the dial.
- Clear the snow before you start anything. Snow is an insulator. Leave it on and you hold the outer face at freezing while the inner face heats, which is the worst version of the gradient.

Check what your remote start actually does. Many factory and aftermarket remote start systems default to full defrost with the temperature at maximum when the outside temperature is below a set point, then run unattended for ten or fifteen minutes. The cabin-warm-first alternative
If your windshield already has damage in it, there is a gentler routine than any version of pointing hot air at cold glass. Warm the car, then let the car warm the glass.
Run the heater on floor mode only, at a moderate temperature, until the cabin is genuinely comfortable. Heated windshields and wiper park zones
Some vehicles heat the windshield itself. Two different systems get called the same thing:
- A fully heated windshield carries very fine wires or a conductive coating across the whole viewing area and warms the entire panel at once, which is the kindest thing you can do to laminated glass because the whole sheet moves together. - A heated wiper park zone heats only the strip where the blades rest, so they do not freeze down. It is useful and it is not a defroster. Because it warms one band at the base, treat it like the defrost ducts: switch it on early and let it work slowly.
