How to Clean a Windshield Properly

The short answer

  • Use two towels: a damp one to lift the road film and a dry one to buff it off within seconds. One towel spreads a film instead of removing it.
  • Clean in the shade on glass cool enough to touch. Cleaner that flashes off on a hot panel leaves the dissolved soil behind as a haze you then have to redo.
  • Keep ammonia cleaners out of the car. They will not etch the glass, but they attack the adhesive and dye in window film and dry out dash plastics and rubber seals.
  • Wipe the outside horizontally and the inside vertically. When a streak turns up later, its direction tells you which face of the glass to clean instead of both.
  • Wet the outside before any towel touches it. Dragging dry grit across glass is how the fine arc scratches in the wiper sweep begin, and those never wash off.
  • Clean the wiper blades first. A loaded blade refilms the whole windshield in one sweep, which is why freshly cleaned glass smears in the first rain.

Clean glass is a method, not a product. Work in the shade on cool glass, use two towels instead of one, wipe the outside horizontally and the inside vertically, and keep ammonia out of the car entirely. The two-towel part is the whole trick: a damp towel lifts the road film into suspension, and a second dry towel takes it off the panel before it can dry back down as the streak you see at night.

The two-towel method, step by step

Ten minutes covers both sides of the windshield. Every step below exists because of one specific failure it prevents, so none of them are optional if you want the result to hold up against oncoming headlights.

  1. Park in the shade and touch the glass first. If the panel is too hot to rest your hand on, cleaner flashes off before you can wipe it and the dissolved soil dries straight back onto the surface as a haze. Early morning, evening or a garage bay.
  2. Wet the outside before any towel touches it. Road film carries grit. Dragging dry grit across glass is exactly how the fine arc marks in the wiper sweep get started, and unlike film, those do not clean off later. A hose, a spray bottle or a soaked towel laid on for a minute all work. The difference between a cleaning problem and a permanent scratch is often just this step.
  3. Clean the wiper blades before you clean the glass. Lift the arms, pinch a damp cloth around each blade and draw it along the rubber until the cloth stops coming away gray. A loaded blade refilms the entire windshield in one sweep, which is why glass you just cleaned smears the first time it rains. If the cloth keeps coming away black after four or five passes, the rubber is finished and the blade needs replacing rather than cleaning.
  4. Spray the towel, not the glass. Overspray lands on the dash top, the headliner and the painted pillars, then bakes and returns to the glass later as more film. Spraying the towel also keeps liquid out of the cowl vents and off the molding at the base of the windshield.
  5. Work half a panel at a time in overlapping straight passes. Straight passes let you see what you have covered. Circular scrubbing hides the misses until headlights find them. Refold the damp towel to a clean face as soon as it starts gliding instead of grabbing, because a saturated towel is just moving the soil around.
  6. Buff dry within seconds, not minutes. The streak is not the cleaner, it is the cleaner evaporating on its own with the soil still suspended in it. The dry pass has to chase the damp pass closely, which is the whole reason you work in halves rather than whole panels.
  7. Do the edges last and deliberately. Fold the towel over two fingers and run the top band, both sides and the lower two inches above the cowl. That perimeter holds the heaviest film and it is where almost everyone stops early.
  8. Check from the driver's seat. Sit down and look through the glass at a bright sky, a white wall or a lit street. Standing outside and admiring the panel tells you nothing about the angle you actually drive at.

What to clean with, and what each one costs you

Several of these will clean a windshield perfectly well. The differences are in what else they touch on the way past.

Two of those rows are jobs in their own right. Mineral spotting has its own removal order in water spots and etching, and solvent work is covered contaminant by contaminant in removing sap, bugs and tar.

Why ammonia does not belong in a car

Ammonia will not hurt the windshield itself. Soda-lime glass is chemically indifferent to it. The damage happens to everything within reach of the overspray, and in a car interior that is a lot of material packed close together.

  • Window film. Aftermarket tint on side and rear glass is dyed or metallized polyester bonded with an adhesive layer. Ammonia attacks both, which shows as purpling, hazing and lifting at the edges. On many vehicles the shade band across the top of the windshield is tinted inside the laminate and is safe, but the same bottle used on the rear glass is not.
  • Interior plastics. Ammonia pulls plasticizer out of soft dash and door surfaces, drying them into a chalky finish and accelerating the oily haze that forms on the inside of the glass. You end up cleaning the symptom while feeding the cause.
  • Rubber and seals. Repeated contact hardens door seals and wiper rubber, and hardened rubber chatters.
  • You, in a closed cabin. Fumes concentrate fast with the doors shut, and interior glass takes several minutes of close work.

Rear glass has one extra rule. The defroster grid is printed on the inside surface, so it is mechanical pressure that destroys it, not the cleaner. Wipe along the lines, never across them, never with an abrasive pad, and never with a fingernail through the towel. A broken grid line is a dead stripe you cannot clean back.

The vertical and horizontal streak test

Wipe the outside with horizontal strokes and the inside with vertical strokes, and keep that convention every time. Streaks are ridges of residue left behind by the final buffing pass, so they run parallel to the direction of that pass. When a streak shows up three nights later, its direction tells you which face of the glass it is on and you clean one side instead of guessing at both.

Streaks that do not follow either direction are telling you something else:

  • Smear that appears the instant the wipers run. The blade is contaminated or hardened, or a repellent product has partly worn off. Start with chatter and smearing causes.
  • A hazy band that follows the wiper arc and survives cleaning. That is abrasion in the glass surface, not soil. See how wipers haze glass.
  • A general veil that only appears against headlights. If cleaning both faces does not touch it, you are probably looking at pitting from years of highway grit, which is a glass condition rather than a cleaning one.
  • Water beading in patches instead of sheeting evenly. A repellent coating breaking down unevenly, which needs stripping rather than more cleaner.

The inside is the harder half

The inside face carries an oily film the outside never gets, and it sits behind a dash that blocks your hand from the lowest several inches of it. Two adjustments handle both problems.

First, degrease before you clean. Glass cleaner alone tends to spread an oil film into an even smear rather than lift it, which is why the inside looks worse after a quick wipe. One pass with the alcohol and distilled water mix, sprayed onto the towel, then a normal glass cleaner pass, then a dry buff.

Second, get proper access. Slide the passenger seat back and work from the passenger door with your body inside the cabin, or use a flat-headed reach tool with a thin microfiber stretched over it. Keep the head flat: an edge-on tool concentrates pressure on a small area and can drive trapped grit into the surface. Around the mirror mount, wipe rather than spray, because the housing there usually contains a camera and a rain sensor gel pad that liquid should not reach. Nothing abrasive on the inside face, ever. No powder, no scouring pad, no steel wool. A scratch on the inner surface sits directly in your line of sight, and it cannot be polished out of the driver's viewing area without introducing a dished area that distorts the view. The short list of tools worth owning

  • Two or three glass-specific microfiber towels. Low pile, tight weave for the damp pass, waffle weave for the dry buff. Plush drying towels are the wrong tool here: the long fibers hold soil and leave lint.
  • A dedicated washing routine for those towels. Wash them separately from towels that have touched wax, tire dressing or interior protectant, and skip fabric softener. Softener leaves a water-repelling residue in the fibers that streaks glass reliably.
  • A trigger sprayer with an adjustable fan. A fine fan wets the towel evenly. A jet stream just soaks one spot.
  • Distilled water, by the gallon. It costs very little and it is the difference between a clean panel and a panel covered in fresh mineral spots as it dries.
  • Isopropyl alcohol. Diluted to roughly 15 to 30 percent for the interior degreasing pass.
  • A flat reach tool with a pivoting head. The only practical way to work the bottom of a steeply raked windshield without lying across the dash.
  • Optional: a clay bar or clay mitt. For embedded industrial fallout and overspray you can feel with a fingertip through a plastic bag. Use it only with plenty of lubricant, in straight strokes, and fold it away the moment it picks up grit.

The mistakes that put the streaks there

  • Cleaning in direct sun. The single most common cause of a streaked windshield.
  • One towel doing both jobs. A damp towel that is also your drying towel just redistributes what it picked up.
  • Skipping the blades. You cleaned the glass and left the applicator dirty.
  • Using a towel that has touched dressing. Silicone from a trim or tire product transfers to glass at very low concentrations and produces a smear that resists ordinary cleaner. It usually needs the alcohol pass to break.
  • Scrubbing over a fresh chip. Pressure and liquid drive dirt and water into the break, which permanently limits how clear the eventual repair can look. Tape over it and get it filled, as how soon to repair a chip explains.

What to do next

Clean the glass tonight with two towels, then use the clean panel for something else: it is the only condition in which you can actually inspect a windshield. Raking light across dry, clean glass shows chips, scratches and the beginnings of haze that dirt hides completely. Can I use household glass cleaner on my car windows?

On the windshield glass itself it will not do harm, but most household cleaners contain ammonia and the overspray is the problem. Ammonia degrades window film adhesive and dye on side and rear glass, dries out vinyl dash surfaces and hardens rubber seals. An ammonia-free automotive cleaner, or distilled water with a little isopropyl alcohol, does the same job without that risk.

Why does my windshield streak only at night?

Because a thin residue film scatters point sources of light without blocking daylight. During the day you look at a broadly lit scene and the film disappears. At night an oncoming headlight is a bright point, and the residue spreads it into a bloom across your view. It is a sign the drying pass was too slow or the towel was already saturated.

How often should I clean the inside of the windshield?

Every four to six weeks for most cars, and monthly for a new vehicle, a smoker's car or anything parked in strong sun. The interior film builds continuously rather than arriving all at once, so it is easy to miss until the first time you drive into low sun and cannot see. A quick dry buff weekly stretches the interval.

Is newspaper better than a microfiber towel for glass?

It was a reasonable trick decades ago when paper stock and inks were different. Modern newsprint softens, sheds pulp and leaves ink on light trim. A tight-weave microfiber for the damp pass and a waffle weave for the dry buff outperform it easily, and they can be washed and reused for years.

Will glass cleaner damage a rain repellent coating or the rear defroster lines?

Ordinary ammonia-free cleaner will not strip a cured repellent coating, though alcohol-heavy mixes and any abrasive will shorten its life. The defroster grid is different: it is printed on the inside surface of the rear glass and is destroyed by rubbing, not by chemistry. Wipe along the lines and never scrub across them.
