Pressure instead does something specific and bad. Tree sap: alcohol and heat, never a fingernail
Pine and fir resin is a mix of resin acids and terpenes. It shrugs off water completely, which is why a car wash drives past it, and it dissolves readily in alcohol, which is why a soaked pad works so well. Warmth helps too: sap that is brittle at 50 degrees is soft and tacky at 90, so on a cool day, warming the spot with a hand or a warm damp cloth before the alcohol goes on cuts the work in half.
- Wash the panel first. Solvent applied over road grit just grinds the grit around.
- Soak a folded microfiber corner in isopropyl alcohol and hold it on the blob. Do not wipe yet. Count to thirty for fresh sap, several minutes for old.
- Wipe in one direction and inspect. If a hard core remains, resoak rather than pressing harder.

Bug residue: water is the solvent, time is the tool
Insect remains are mostly protein and body fluid, and protein rehydrates. That makes plain water the primary solvent and dwell time the primary technique, which is genuinely useful to know at a rest stop with nothing but a wet paper towel. Lay the wet towel over the area, leave it while you fill the tank, then wipe.
What makes bugs difficult is heat. Baked onto a hot windshield for a few days, the residue dries into a tenacious film that survives an automatic wash. At that point you need a soapy soak or a dedicated bug remover, dwell time, and often a light clay pass for the last of it.
Now the part that gets exaggerated. Bug residue is often described as etching glass. On paint and on plastic headlight lenses that is real: the acidity of the remains combined with heat and UV attacks clear coat within days in a hot summer, and by the end of a season it can be past cleaning and into paint correction. Glass is far more chemically resistant than clear coat, and you are not going to etch a windshield with insects over one summer. What you get on glass is a baked-on film that resists washing, dulls any water repellent coating and shows up as glare at night. Treat it as a stubborn cleaning problem on the glass and as a genuine finish problem on the hood, mirrors and lights, and do them at the same time.
Clear the cowl while you are there. Bugs, pine needles and leaf litter collect in the vented panel at the base of the windshield and rot into a mat that blocks the drains. That backs water into the plenum, which is a common cause of a damp passenger footwell and a windshield that fogs and will not clear. Road tar: the solvent that damages everything else
Tar and asphalt binder are petroleum products, so they need a petroleum-based or citrus-based solvent. Those work quickly and predictably on the tar. The problem is that they work on other things too.

- Cowl and trim plastic. Textured black plastic can be stained or whitened permanently by a solvent that sits on it, and the cowl is directly below the glass you are working on.
- Fresh paint and wraps. Paint less than roughly a month old is still curing and is vulnerable. Vinyl wrap and matte finishes are not solvent tolerant at all.
- The bonded edge of the windshield. The molding and the urethane bead sit under the perimeter of the glass. Do not let solvent pool there, and be especially careful in the first week after a replacement, when the adhesive is still gaining strength. The safe procedure is to apply the solvent to a pad rather than the panel, hold it on the tar speck, wipe once, and move on. Then wash the whole area with car soap to carry the solvent away, rinse, and finish with a normal glass clean.
The razor blade question
Professionals do use new blades on glass, and used correctly the technique marks nothing. Used carelessly it produces a straight scratch directly in the driver's view, which cannot be repaired and which polishing usually makes worse rather than better. The conditions are narrow:
- Flooded, never dry. Soapy water on the glass the whole time, so anything the blade lifts floats away instead of being dragged.
- New blade, shallow angle, one direction. A nicked or rusted edge cuts a permanent line the length of the stroke. Change blades often and never use one that has touched anything else.
- Glass only. Never on plastic rear windows, never on headlight lenses, and never on the inside of side or rear glass, which usually carries film.
- Accept that coatings go with it. Any repellent treatment in the area is removed and needs reapplying.

The honest line on blades. Outside the driver's viewing area, a wet blade in careful hands is a reasonable tool for a stubborn tar speck or an old inspection sticker. Protecting the car while you work
- Shade and a cool panel. Solvents flash off hot glass before they can dwell, leaving a haze that then needs its own cleanup.
- Wet the paint below the work area first. Runoff hitting wet paint is diluted on contact rather than concentrating on a dry surface.
- Lay a towel in the wiper channel. It catches drips before they reach the cowl vents, the drains and the blades.
- Lift the wiper arms clear, or bag the blades. Two seconds of prevention against a set of blades you would otherwise replace.
