Windshields in Extreme Heat
The short answer

Heat alone does not break a windshield. A panel that is uniformly 160 degrees is in no danger at all. What breaks glass in summer is the difference between one part of the panel and the part beside it, and a car parked in the sun builds the largest such differences of the whole year: a baked outer face, a shade line lying across the glass, and a driver who gets in and points maximum cold air at all of it. What a parked car actually does in summer sun
Sunlight passes through the glass as short-wave radiation, gets absorbed by the dash, the seats and the carpet, and is re-radiated as long-wave heat that the glass does not let back out. The interior becomes a collector. On a clear day, cabin air commonly climbs 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit above the outside temperature within an hour, so a 95 degree afternoon puts the air well past 130. Dark plastic surfaces run hotter still, and a black dash above 150 degrees is ordinary rather than remarkable.
Those are typical figures for a closed car in direct sun, not measurements from any single test, and the spread is wide. Interior color, glass tint, solar-coated glass, parking angle, humidity and whether the windows are cracked all move the number. What matters for the glass is not the peak anyway.
The windshield is heated from both sides at once. The outer face takes direct sun and hot air. The inner face takes radiant heat from the dash below it, which is why the lower third of the inside surface is usually the hottest part of the panel. Because a windshield is raked back rather than vertical, it also intercepts more sun through the middle of the day than any other glass on the car. The number that matters is the difference, not the peak
Glass expands as it warms, and a region that cannot expand as much as its neighbor ends up in tension. Tension finds flaws. - Shade lines. Parking half under a tree, a carport roof or the shadow of a building puts a boundary across the panel with sun on one side and shade on the other, and that boundary creeps across the glass for hours as the sun moves. It is the most underrated summer risk there is.
- Dash to shade band. The lower inner surface is being cooked by the dash while the top of the glass sits under the tinted shade band, which absorbs and behaves differently again.
- The perimeter. The black ceramic band absorbs strongly, and the body flange behind it conducts heat into a large metal structure. So the edge can be running hotter or cooler than the middle depending on the hour, and the edge is the restrained, high-stress zone described in edge cracks.

Cold water on hot glass, and the other summer triggers
Water carries heat away from glass far faster than air does, so anything wet landing on a baked windshield changes the surface temperature of one region within seconds. Here are the events that actually cause summer cracks, in the order drivers run into them.

Getting into a baked car without shocking the glass
- Purge the air before you sit down. Open the doors, or open the driver window and swing the passenger door a few times. Half a minute removes the worst of the superheated air, which the air conditioning would otherwise have to work through.
- Start the car with the fan high, the mode on face or floor, and the windows down. High fan is fine here. What matters is that the cold air is not pointed at the windshield.
- Drive with the windows down for the first minute if you can. Moving air pulls heat out of the interior faster than any air conditioning system will.
- Switch recirculation on once the cabin air is close to outside temperature. Now the system is cooling air that is already cool, which is when recirculation earns its keep.
- Bring air to the windshield last, and never on maximum cold while the outer face is still baking. By the time the cabin is comfortable, the glass has come down with it.

The far more serious version of this problem. Do sun shades actually work?
Yes, for what they are for, which is the interior rather than the glass. The mechanism is simple: a reflective shade turns solar radiation back out before it reaches the dash. Because the dash is the main absorber and the main re-radiator, blocking it lowers the peak cabin air temperature, keeps the dash and steering wheel usable, and cuts the radiant heating of the inner glass surface. What a shade does not do is much for the outer face of the windshield, which is still sitting in the sun regardless.
Ranked by what they actually accomplish:
- A garage or a covered space beats everything, by removing the solar load entirely. Free, if you have one.
- An exterior cover keeps the sun off the glass itself, which is the only option that meaningfully lowers the outer surface temperature. The tradeoffs are fitting it every time, wind, and a gritty cover abrading the glass if it flaps.
- A custom-fit reflective interior shade is the practical winner for most drivers, because it covers edge to edge with no gaps for sun to stream through.
- A folding accordion or pop-up reflective shade works nearly as well if it is genuinely reflective and roughly the right size.
- A thin dark shade is the weakest option. Dark material absorbs rather than reflects, so it becomes a warm panel sitting an inch from your glass.

Why summer is chip-running season in the southwest
In hot, dry states the summer plays the role that the first hard freeze plays in the north, and for stacked reasons rather than one.
- The daily swing is enormous. Clear desert air radiates heat away fast after sunset, so the same panel that was above 150 degrees at 4 p.m. can be near 60 before dawn. The glass cycles through that range every single day, not a few times a winter.
- The chip supply is constant. Gravel shoulders, unpaved access roads, year-round construction and a lot of loose aggregate mean more impacts per mile, which is the subject of gravel roads and rural driving.
