How much roof strength comes from the glass

There is no test result that says your sedan loses a specific number of inches of survival space if the windshield leaves. What survival space actually means
Roof strength is not about keeping the sheet metal pretty. It is about the distance between the roof rail and the top of a belted occupant's head while the vehicle is rolling. Three things matter in that moment:
- Intrusion. How far the roof and pillars move into the occupant space, and how quickly. A roof that deforms slowly and stops is doing its job even if it looks wrecked afterward.

A rollover is not one impact. It is a sequence of them, often starting at a roof corner or an A-pillar, and the loads arrive from angles the panel was never loaded from in normal driving. Why the pinch weld and rust conversation matters
Here is the part most drivers never hear about. The urethane bond is only as good as what it is bonded to. It grips sound paint, factory primer or a correctly applied pinch weld primer. It does not grip rust. Corrosion under the flange keeps growing beneath the adhesive, lifting it from the metal, and it does so silently over months and years. The panel looks perfectly installed the whole time.
Corrosion at the flange has two common causes. The first is a previous replacement where the technician cut down to bare metal and glued straight over it without treating the scratches, so moisture started work under the bead. The pressure point. A shop that finds rust mid job has a customer waiting, a bay booked and a windshield already removed. The path of least resistance is to bead over it and say nothing. If you are told there is corrosion, treat "we can just seal it" as the wrong answer, and expect the job to take longer or to be finished on another day. Two factors stack. The first is rollover exposure: taller, narrower vehicles are more prone to rolling than low wide ones, which is why federal rollover resistance ratings exist per model and are worth checking for your own vehicle rather than assumed. The second is corrosion exposure: cars that live with road salt, coastal air or a long history of glass work at the flange are the ones where the bond is most likely to be sitting on something imperfect.
