Why nothing seems to be happening for long stretches
Three deliberate waits are built into a correct job, and all three look like idleness from a kitchen window.
- Primer flash time. After primer is applied to the glass or to bare metal on the pinch weld, it has to be left for a period set by the adhesive maker, commonly a few minutes per coat, before anything goes on top of it. Applying the bead early gives you a bond built on solvent that has not left yet.
- Open time. This one is the opposite of a wait: once the bead is laid, the glass must be set within the adhesive's working window, often 5 to 15 minutes. It is why the bead and the set look rushed compared with everything else, and why this is the wrong moment to ask a question.

This matters because there are only two ways to make the job dramatically faster: remove the pauses, or remove steps. Both are invisible from the driver's seat and both show up months later as a leak, a whistle or a bond that was never full strength. What you will hear, and what each sound means
- A high, steady zipping or sawing. The cut-out, using wire or line drawn through the old adhesive. Twenty minutes of it is normal on a tight modern bond line.
- Sharp single pops. Trim and cowl clips releasing. Normal, and the reason a good technician clears debris and works slowly at the ends of the panel.
- A solvent smell for a few minutes. Cleaner, activator or primer. It fades. If it lingers in the cabin afterward, air the car out rather than worrying.
- A ratcheting click, repeatedly. The caulking gun laying the bead. This is the five to fifteen minute window where you leave them alone.
- Chimes and beeps with the doors open. The scan tool talking to the modules, before and after.
- Twenty minutes of silence once the glass is in. Exactly right. That is the cure clock.
- A tool running against bare metal for more than a moment. Worth a calm question at the end, since the paint on the pinch weld is meant to survive the cut. Ask what was done about any scratch, not whether one happened.
Two windows where you should not start a conversation: from the first squeeze of adhesive until the glass is decked and taped, and at any point during a calibration. The calibration hour

Static looks like a photography studio. The car is positioned indoors on a level floor, wheels straightened, tire pressures set, targets placed on stands at measured distances in front, and lighting controlled. Expect 45 to 120 minutes and expect the technician to measure carefully, because the target position is derived from the vehicle's centerline rather than eyeballed. Dynamic looks like someone borrowing your car. It is a road drive at a specified speed on a road with clear lane markings, usually 20 to 60 minutes, and it can fail and need repeating if the weather or the traffic will not cooperate. What you should receive at the end is a report naming the vehicle, the date, the systems calibrated and the result, plus a post-scan showing codes cleared. An absent warning light is not the same thing as a correct aim, because a camera can be confidently pointed at the wrong place. Four things exist at the end of a correct job. Retention tape still on the glass, with an instruction about when to remove it, usually the next day. A water test done in front of you, with a hose run across the glass and the seams checked from inside. Paperwork naming the glass that went in, the adhesive product, the safe drive away time for that day, and the calibration result. And a car that is as clean inside as it was when you handed it over.
