What lives behind a Jetta mirror
Volkswagen packages the electronics in a single molded housing behind the rearview mirror, and on a well equipped car that housing contains three separate things which people tend to talk about as one.
- The forward camera. Looks through a clear window in the black frit and feeds Front Assist, lane keeping and, where fitted, the lane centering that comes with adaptive cruise. Removing the glass takes away its aiming reference, so calibration follows replacement.
- The rain and light sensor. Volkswagen combines both functions in one unit bonded to the glass through an optical pad. The rain half fires infrared into the glass and measures how much bounces back, since water on the outer surface lets light escape instead of reflecting. - The mirror base itself. Bonded to a button on the glass, sometimes carrying the auto dimming wiring and a humidity sensor for the climate control.
All three have to come off the old glass and go onto the new one, and only one of them tolerates being reused. The optical pad under the rain sensor does not: air trapped in a reused pad reads as water and gives you wipers that sweep on a dry day. IQ.DRIVE and what standard means by model year
IQ.DRIVE is Volkswagen's umbrella name for its driver assistance suite, covering Front Assist, lane keeping, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise and the lane centering function marketed as Travel Assist. The naming is where confusion starts, because at various points Volkswagen has sold these functions as a named package on some trims and as standard equipment on others, and the split moved between model years. What is reliable is what the car does. Front Assist and lane keeping read the road through the windshield camera. Blind spot monitoring uses radar behind the rear bumper cover and is untouched by glass work. Park assist uses ultrasonic sensors in the bumpers, which are likewise irrelevant here. So the practical test is simple: if the car warns you about lane markings or steers itself between them, there is a camera on the glass and the job includes a calibration. If it only beeps about cars beside you and objects behind you, it may not. Acoustic glass, and why it is on more Jettas than owners expect
Every laminated windshield is two plies of glass bonded around a plastic interlayer. In a standard windshield that interlayer is a single sheet of polyvinyl butyral doing a structural job: holding the glass together on impact. An acoustic windshield uses a multilayer interlayer with a softer damping core sandwiched inside it, and that core does something extra.
Here is the mechanism. Any stiff panel has a frequency band where it stops resisting sound and starts transmitting it efficiently, because the bending waves in the panel line up with the sound waves in the air. For a windshield that band falls in the middle of the range where tire roar, wind rush and other traffic live. The soft core in an acoustic interlayer lets the two glass plies shear very slightly against each other, converting that bending energy into heat instead of passing it into the cabin. The panel still looks identical, weighs about the same and fits the same opening. It simply damps the band your ears care about most. Volkswagen has used acoustic windshields fairly broadly, including on trims where buyers assume they got the basic part. That matters because the substitution is silent at the point of sale. A plain windshield in place of an acoustic one fits perfectly, passes every leak test, calibrates normally and warranties as sound work. The only symptom is that the car is noisier than it was, at speeds you cannot test in the shop's parking lot, and the only remedy at that point is another windshield you pay for again.

- Reused rain sensor pad. Cheap to do right, annoying forever if it is not.

- A pillar trim and mouldings. Volkswagen trim is designed to be removed once. Reused clips are a common source of a whistle at highway speed, which is where wind noise diagnosis starts.
