The Shade Band at the Top of Your Windshield

The short answer

The colored strip across the top of your windshield is not a film and not a coating. It is a pigmented band built into the plastic interlayer between the two sheets of glass, usually blue or green, typically running about 3 to 6 inches down from the top edge before it fades out to clear. It cannot be peeled off, added later or repaired, which means a windshield with one and a windshield without one are two different parts. If yours has a band, the replacement needs the same band, in the same color, coming down to the same depth.

What the band is made of

A windshield is two sheets of glass bonded around a plastic sheet. To make a shade band, that interlayer is produced with pigment concentrated along one edge, strongest at the very top and thinning smoothly to nothing. The band is then buried inside the laminate when the plies are pressed together, which explains everything you notice about it: the color has no hard edge, it never bubbles or lifts, it does not fade unevenly at the corners the way applied film does, and no amount of scraping touches it.

Shops and part catalogs call it a shade band, a sun band, a tint band or a shade top. The color choice belongs to the vehicle manufacturer and is normally matched to the car's other glass, which is why a blue band and green side windows look wrong together and a mismatched replacement is obvious from twenty feet in front of the car.

One thing it is not is a sun protection feature in any meaningful sense. Every laminated windshield already blocks nearly all ultraviolet light because of the interlayer itself, band or no band, as covered in privacy glass and UV protection. How to measure your band before the old glass goes

Five minutes with a tape measure gives you something a part number cannot argue with.

  1. Measure from the glass, not the trim. Stand in front of the car and find the actual top edge of the glass under the molding. Run the tape straight down at the center of the windshield.
  2. Record two numbers. The depth where the color is still solid, and the depth where it has faded out completely. A band described as 5 inches usually means the second number.
  3. Name the color. Blue, green, gray and bronze are the common ones. Hold a white card behind the glass at the top if you cannot tell blue from green in daylight.
  4. Photograph it from directly in front. Straight on, in even light, with the whole windshield in frame. This is what you compare against on collection day.
  5. Check where it stops relative to the mirror. Note whether the band reaches the camera or sensor housing behind the mirror, or fades out above it.

Deeper bands tend to appear on steeply raked windshields, where there is more glass above your eye line to begin with. Your own measurement beats any general figure, and it is the evidence that settles a dispute later. Take the corner monogram photo at the same time.

The AS-1 line and why it keeps coming up

The AS-1 line is a reference mark placed on the windshield by the glass manufacturer, usually a small AS-1 notation near each side, marking the top of the area treated as the driver's critical view. State rules on windshield tinting are commonly written against it: material may be applied above the AS-1 line, and where no line is marked, above a fixed distance from the top of the glass, with 5 inches the figure that appears most often. Here is the part that trips people up. Those rules are written about material applied to glass, while a factory shade band is inside glazing that was certified as a complete windshield before it ever reached the car. In practice that is why cars leave the factory with bands that would look aggressive as a film, and why enforcement attention lands on aftermarket strips rather than on original glass. It is also why stacking a film strip on top of an existing factory band is the version that gets flagged: the two add together, and only one of them was certified that way.

Do not treat that as a guarantee for your state. A handful of states word their windshield rules around light transmittance or around any tinted material rather than applied material, and inspection practice varies more than the statutes do. Read your own state page before you add anything to the top of your glass, and if you live in an inspection state, ask the inspection station rather than the tint shop.

Wording, exemptions and inspection practice all vary, and they change. Verify against your state's rules rather than a general summary, and remember that a citation for glass is usually written for something else and includes the windshield as an add on.

Why it has to match on the replacement

Four reasons, in rough order of how often they bite.

  • It is a different part number. Banded and unbanded versions are ordered separately. A supplier that stocks only one will send that one, and unless someone asked, nobody notices until the glass is on the car.
  • The mismatch is visible from the street. A green band replacing a blue one, or a shallow band where a deep one used to be, changes how the front of the car reads. On a lease return or a sale it is the kind of detail that invites questions.
  • Glare comes back. If your commute runs east in the morning or west in the evening, losing the band is a daily annoyance, not a cosmetic one. Going the other way, gaining a deeper band than you had can put an overhead traffic signal behind tint when you are first in line at the stop bar, which matters most for shorter drivers and low seating positions.
  • The camera looks through the same glass. On vehicles with a forward facing camera, the band and the clear aperture in the frit are laid out together as one design. A part where the band drops lower than the original can put tinted glass into the top of the camera's field, and calibration is where that shows up. The good news is that this is a cheap thing to get right. The band adds little to the part, typically nothing to about 60 dollars, so it is never the line worth economizing on. Where it costs real money is when the correct banded part only exists as a manufacturer item, which turns a small preference into the OEM versus aftermarket question. Price both versions in the cost estimator before you accept a substitution.

Before you book the job

Put your measurement and your photograph in front of the shop and ask one question: does the part you are ordering have the same shade band, in the same color? Get the answer on the estimate rather than in conversation. If the shop offers a substitution because the exact part is on back order, decide deliberately rather than by default, and say so in writing. Can a shade band be added to a windshield that does not have one?

Not as a factory band. The color is sealed inside the laminate during manufacture, so the only option after the fact is an applied film strip on the inside surface, fitted by a tint shop. That is a different product legally and practically: it can bubble or peel, and it falls squarely under your state's tinting rules.

The windshield left the factory as certified glazing, and most state rules are aimed at material applied to glass rather than at original glass. That is the general picture, not a promise. A few states word their rules around light transmittance or any tinted material, so check your own state page before assuming, especially in an inspection state.

How far down should the shade band come?

It varies by vehicle, typically about 3 to 6 inches measured down from the top edge of the glass at the center, with steeply raked windshields tending toward the deeper end. There is no universal figure. The only number that matters for a replacement is the one you measured on your own car.

The new windshield's band is a different color. Is that worth complaining about?

Yes, if you did not agree to it. A different color or depth means a different part than the one that came off the car, and the time to raise it is the day you collect the vehicle. It is usually a small cost difference, which makes it an easy thing for a shop to put right rather than argue about.

Does the shade band block UV or heat?

Barely. Almost all ultraviolet is already blocked by the plastic interlayer running through the whole windshield, band or not, and a pigmented band does little for infrared heat. Its job is glare from a high sun and from overhead lighting. Heat rejection is a coating feature and is ordered separately.
