Why machine glass breaks differently
Cab glass rarely fails from the stone strike that takes out a car windshield. It fails from edge damage, frame movement and fasteners, which is why the same corner often breaks twice.

Because holes and edges are cut before tempering, a broken pane cannot be trimmed to fit and a blank cannot be modified to match yours. Treat these as ordinary retail ranges rather than measured figures. Machine glass prices move more than car glass because volumes are low and, for a formed panel, one manufacturer's list price is effectively the whole market. Take the broken pane with you, or take the whole opening. - The machine dealer. Has the part number, the formed panels and the hardware already bonded. Slowest and most expensive, and the right call when the pane is curved, carries hardware, or the machine is under warranty.
- A local auto glass shop. Carries urethane, primers and gasket profiles, and knows how to bond glass into a frame properly. Many can order or fabricate flat panels through a flat glass supplier. They may not know your machine, so bring the pattern and expect to talk through the mounting.
- A flat glass or glazing shop. Cheapest route for a plain rectangle, because cutting, grinding, drilling and tempering are their daily work. They will not usually fit it for you, and they do not do bonded installations.
- A cab glass specialist. Regional businesses that do nothing else, carry gasket profiles by section, hold common patterns and travel to the machine. Where one exists, they are usually the fastest and best value. Availability is patchy outside farming and construction regions.
Ask any of them the same three questions: is my pane flat or formed, can you supply it without the dealer, and can you fit it where the machine is. How the pane is held in, and why that changes the job
Machine cabs use three mounting systems, sometimes all three on one cab, and each has a different failure mode and a different labor cost.
- Rubber gasket with a locking strip. The classic setup on older cabs. The pane sits in a channel and a strip is rolled into the gasket to lock it. Reuse the gasket only if it is still soft and has no set in it. A hardened gasket leaks, transmits shock straight into the edge and is the reason many second failures happen.
- Bonded with urethane. Increasingly common on late model cabs, and structurally the same idea as a car windshield. Replacing a pane in the field
Most machines are too large or too slow to bring to a shop, so field work is the norm rather than the exception. It is straightforward if the conditions are managed, and the ones that matter are wind, dust and surface temperature. Bonded panes in particular need a clean, dry, correctly primed frame, and the shop conditions that support that are the same ones described in mobile service conditions.
- Park level, out of the wind, and blow the cab out first. Dust settling into fresh adhesive is the most common field failure.

- Inspect the frame lip. A dent, a burr or a spot of corrosion at the lip will start the next break. Dress it and treat the bare metal before the new pane goes in.
- Fit a new locking strip, and a new gasket if there is any doubt. Gaskets are cheap relative to a second panel.
- Torque clamped panels in stages, in a crossing pattern. Follow the machine's service information, and confirm every bushing is present.
- Test before you release the machine. Close and latch the doors, check gaps all round, then run a hose over the seals and look for water inside. Confirm the cab's fan brings the cab up to positive pressure again.
An open cab is a stop-work condition, not an inconvenience. Getting through the week without the pane
Plastic sheeting and tape hold up on a parked car and fail quickly on a working machine, because field speeds, vibration and dust defeat both the sheet and the adhesive. The stopgap that actually works is a piece of clear polycarbonate cut to the pattern of the opening and held in the existing gasket or clamp frame.
