The answer depends on which kind of RV you have, and the spread is enormous. A Class B van conversion takes the same windshield as the van it was built on, so it is an ordinary job at an ordinary price. A Class C on a cutaway chassis takes the cab glass from that truck or van, which is also routine. A Class A coach is a different product entirely: two large curved halves set in rubber gaskets or bonded to a fiberglass cap, ordered rather than stocked, installed in your driveway by a specialist, and priced in four figures for the pair.

Which glass your RV actually has

Identify the class first, because it decides the price, the lead time and who is allowed to touch it.

These are ordinary 2026 retail ranges rather than measured figures. Coach brand, curvature and whether the part is still in production move them more than anything else, and a discontinued coach with one remaining supplier can sit above every number in that table.

Why a Class A windshield comes in two pieces

Three reasons, all pointing the same way. A single pane spanning the front of an eight foot wide coach would be huge, heavy and deeply curved, which makes the bending tooling expensive and the yield poor. A pane that size is a breakage risk at every step of handling and shipping. And a divided windshield lets the builder run a structural post up the center, supporting the roof cap.

The practical consequence is the useful one: when a rock takes out one side, you replace one half. That is why the driver side half is often on its second or third replacement while the passenger half is original.

Two warnings on replacing a single half. The halves may not match afterward, because a fifteen year old pane carries sun fade in the shade band and fine pitting across the face, so a new half beside it looks clearer and darker at the top. And if the coach has a shaded or solar top band, confirm the replacement carries the same band before it ships, because a mismatch across the center post is very visible from the driver seat.

Gasket set or bonded, and why it changes the job

A gasket set windshield sits in a one piece rubber extrusion. One channel grips the glass, another grips the flange of the opening, and a locking strip is driven into a third channel to expand the rubber and tighten the assembly. It goes in by the rope method: a cord is laid in the body channel of the gasket, the glass and gasket are lifted into the opening from outside, and a technician inside pulls the cord to walk the gasket lip over the flange. Nothing cures, so there is no adhesive wait, though sealant is usually run into the channels against water.

A bonded windshield is glued to the front cap with the same class of urethane a car uses, over primed surfaces, and becomes part of the structure once cured. The car rules apply: correct primer, correct bead height, and a wait set by the adhesive chart for that day's temperature and humidity rather than a fixed hour.   • Replace the gasket with the glass, always. A gasket that has spent a decade in the sun has hardened, shrunk and taken a set. Reusing it is the most common cause of a leak on a coach that has just had glass work, and the part is cheap next to doing the job twice.
  • Ask which method your coach uses before you get quotes. The two jobs need different skills and consumables, and a shop that mainly does bonded automotive work may not rope in a coach windshield well.
  • Expect the divider post seal in the job. The center trim and seal come out to release the inner edges of both halves, and that seal is a frequent leak point on its own.
  • On bonded coaches, ask what the drive away time is for that day, then add margin before a long highway run, because a coach body twists far more than a car body does.

Availability, lead times and freight damage

Coach glass is made in small runs for a market measured in thousands of units per model, not millions, so very little of it sits on a shelf near you. The pane is ordered from a specialty supplier, crated and freighted to the installer, and the honest range is a few days on a common current model to several weeks on a discontinued coach with one remaining source.

Breakage in transit is common enough that it should shape your plan. A large curved pane in a crate travels on a pallet through several handoffs, and one corner impact ends it. Three things follow:

  1. Do not book the install until the glass has arrived and been uncrated and inspected, even if waiting costs you a few days.
  2. Ask who owns the freight damage risk and whether a replacement pane ships immediately at no charge to you. Get the answer before you pay a deposit.
  3. Do not schedule a trip around the original date. Build slack in, or you will be choosing between a damaged windshield and a canceled reservation.

Why the work happens where the coach is parked

A Class A coach does not fit in an auto glass bay, so with rare exceptions the technician comes to you. That reverses the usual advice: for a car, in shop is generally better, but for a coach, mobile is often the only option.   • Level ground and room to work. Both sides of the coach, plus space for a ladder or a lift stand at the front cap.
  • Low wind. A coach windshield half is large, heavy and flat enough to act like a sail. A crew that postpones in a stiff breeze is telling you something good about itself.
  • Temperature and humidity within the adhesive range on a bonded coach, since the cure chart governs the wait before the coach can move.
  • Two technicians, minimum. One outside setting the pane, one inside working the rope or the gasket lip. One person doing this alone is a warning sign.

Leaks, delamination and what usually goes wrong

Coach glass fails differently because the structure around it moves more. A long wheelbase body on a ladder frame twists over driveways and rough pavement, the front cap flexes with it, and gaskets work, sealant beds crack and edge stresses build in ways a unibody sedan never sees. Repair the chip, because replacement is a very expensive alternative

Do not let a chip sit through a travel season. Every highway expansion joint, every washboard forest road and every hot afternoon parked facing the sun works on that break. Paying for it, and what to ask for in the quote

The items that surprise owners are the ones outside the glass itself. Ask for the pane or panes, the gasket or the urethane and primer, the divider post seal, crating and freight, the mobile visit and disposal, each on its own line. Then ask what happens if the pane arrives damaged, and what the warranty covers on a leak that appears in three months.

On the claim side the arithmetic is the usual one with bigger numbers: expected cost minus your deductible, weighed against what a comprehensive claim does at renewal.
