The second opinion rule for borderline damage
Get a second opinion when the damage is borderline and the shop telling you to replace is also the shop that would sell you the replacement. Borderline means a crack roughly 4 to 8 inches long, a chip somewhere between 2 and 4 inches from the edge, a break at the boundary of the driver's view, or an old chip whose only real problem is contamination.
Do not spend the afternoon on a second opinion when the damage is clearly past the line: a cracked inner ply, a crack that reaches the edge, anything longer than about a foot, several long cracks at once, or a panel that is already pitted enough to scatter headlights.
