The head-up display is the fork in the road
A windshield is two sheets of glass with a plastic interlayer between them. Project an image onto that sandwich and you get two reflections, one off each glass surface, offset from each other. On a HUD car the interlayer is made slightly wedge-shaped, thicker at the top than the bottom, so the two reflections converge into one image at the driver's eye position. It is a specific optical part, not a coating and not a setting.
What that means practically: if a shop fits a non-HUD panel to a HUD car, you get a permanent ghosted double image and no adjustment in the menu will remove it. The projector is fine, the glass is wrong, and the fix is another windshield. Conversely, a HUD panel on a non-HUD car works but costs you money for nothing.
Two habits protect you here. First, say "my car has head-up display" in the first sentence when you call, not in response to a question. Second, after the job, sit in the driver's seat at your normal position and check the projected speed for a soft second image trailing above or below the main one. Why your toll tag stops working behind new glass

The rain-light sensor and the gel pad nobody mentions
Most 3 Series cars carry a combined rain, light and often humidity sensor in the mirror housing. It works by shining infrared light into the glass at an angle so it bounces off the outer surface and back to a detector. Water on the outside changes how much light comes back, and the wipers respond. That pad is a single-use item. Peeling it off, stretching it and pressing it onto the new glass leaves microscopic air bubbles, and each bubble scatters light exactly the way a raindrop does. Generations, and what calibration actually involves
Three generations are common on US roads: the E90 cars through about 2011, the F30 generation from about 2012 to 2018, and the G20 generation from 2019 onward with a facelift partway through. The body opening, the moulding design and the sensor package all differ across those splits, so a part that fits an F30 sedan is not the part for a G20 sedan. Sedan, wagon and Gran Turismo bodies within a generation generally share the front panel, since the body changes behind the A pillar, but confirm rather than assume.
Whether you need a calibration comes down to that camera check above. - A non-HUD panel on a HUD car. The most expensive mistake available, and the one that is hardest to walk back. Lead with it when you call.
- An uncoated panel substituted for a coated one. Nobody notices in March. Everyone notices in August, when the cabin runs hotter and the air conditioning works harder. Specify the coating and check the markings on the panel that arrives.
