How to tell whether you have head-up display glass
Start the vehicle in daylight, sit in the driver's seat, and look at the glass low down and directly ahead of the steering wheel. If a floating readout of your speed appears out there on the windshield, you have head-up display glass. If the only display near the wheel is behind the instrument cluster lens, you do not. Check this before anyone orders, because the difference is not visible in the parked, switched off car and it is not visible to a parts counter working from a year and model.
The reason it matters is optical rather than electrical. Glass has two reflective surfaces, an outer and an inner, separated by the thickness of the laminate. Bounce a projected image off a standard panel and you get two images offset from each other, which the eye reads as a ghosted double. Display glass fixes it with an interlayer that is deliberately wedge shaped, thicker at the top than at the bottom, angled so the two reflections converge into a single image at the height of a driver's eyes. Co-Pilot360, the camera, and the cameras that do not count
Ford Co-Pilot360 is the umbrella name for the driver assistance package that became standard across the Explorer range with the 2020 generation. - A part for the wrong platform generation. The 2019 to 2020 boundary is the trap. It is usually caught at the vehicle, but only after your old glass is already out, which turns a morning appointment into a day without a car.
- Standard glass into a head-up display vehicle. Silent, permanent and hard to argue about after the fact.
