Pit Fill and Polish: The Finishing Step Most Shops Rush

The pit fill is the last five minutes of a chip repair and the only part of it you touch, clean and wipe every day. The injection stage restores strength inside the break. The pit stage restores the surface: a flat, sealed, wiper friendly spot of cured resin where a small crater of glass used to be. Rushed, it leaves a dish that collects grime, a lump that ticks the wiper blade, or a haze ring you notice in every low sun for the rest of the time you own the car.

A chip repair is really two repairs

A rock strike does two separate kinds of damage, and each one needs its own material. Under the surface it opens fracture planes: the legs of a star, the disc of a bullseye, thin voids with no missing material. At the surface it knocks out a cone of glass, the pit, and that glass is gone for good.

Filling the fracture planes is a penetration problem, solved with thin resin, vacuum and pressure, and covered in the vacuum and pressure cycles. Filling the pit is a volume problem, solved with a much thicker resin that will sit in an open crater on a curved, sometimes vertical surface without running out before it cures. Why those two resins behave so differently is the subject of repair resin chemistry. What matters to you as the owner is simpler: they are two different steps, and only one of them is visible from the driver's seat.

The pit is also the only part of the repair exposed to the outside world. Washer fluid, wax, road film, wiper rubber, ice scrapers and freeze thaw cycles all work on it. That is why the finishing step is not cosmetic housekeeping. It is what keeps the rest of the repair sealed.

The third job is the one drivers underestimate. An unfilled or dished pit is a small open reservoir sitting directly above the repaired break. Contamination that gets in there cannot be flushed out later, which is the same trap described in repairing old, dirty or wet chips, except that this time it happens after the resin has cured and nothing can be done about it.

Why the pit resin cures under a tab

Repair resins are acrylate based and oxygen inhibited. Resin in contact with open air stays soft and tacky at the surface no matter how long the lamp runs, so a small clear tab or strip of film is pressed over the wet pit resin before curing begins. The tab does three things at once: it excludes air so the top surface hardens, it holds the resin in a slight dome so there is material to level, and it gives a flat, optically clean top face rather than a meniscus.

Two details separate a good tab from a bad one. The tab has to be laid down from one edge and pressed across, so air is pushed out rather than trapped. A bubble caught under the tab cures as a void in the finished pit, and it will show as a small bright dot forever. And the tab must not be nudged once the cure has started, because moving partly gelled resin leaves a step that no amount of scraping fixes.

Cure has to be complete before a blade touches it. Under cured resin drags and tears out of the crater rather than shearing off clean, leaving a dished spot. In practice a lamp is more predictable than sunlight, and a technician working in full sun is fighting a cure that starts before the resin has settled, one of several reasons temperature and moisture change the result.

Never drive away with a tacky pit. If the spot is sticky to a light touch, the resin was not cured under a tab or the lamp came off early. It will pick up dust, pollen and road film within a day and cure hard around them. This is the one finishing fault that cannot be corrected later without re-opening the pit.

Razor leveling, the two minutes that set the finish

Once the pit resin is hard, the raised dome left by the tab is scraped flush with the glass. It sounds crude and it is the most skill dependent part of the whole job.

  • A fresh blade, every time. A sharp edge shears cured acrylic cleanly. A dull or nicked one tears it, and a tear that starts below the glass line leaves a crater.
  • Held nearly flat. The blade should ride almost parallel to the glass so it planes the resin down in thin passes. Held at a steep angle it digs, and the corner of the blade catches the soft resin and lifts it out of the pit in one piece.
  • Multiple light passes, changing direction. Working from several directions keeps the resin from being levered up on one side and leaves the surface flat rather than sloped.
  • Glass at a moderate temperature. Hot glass softens cured pit resin enough that the blade smears it. Cold glass makes it brittle and prone to chipping out below the surface.
  • No grit under the blade. Flat annealed glass is harder than a steel blade, so a properly held blade does not scratch it, but a trapped grain of sand does. That is exactly how a repair visit produces the arcs described in windshield scratches.

You can watch this step from a few feet away, and it is worth watching. A technician who scrapes once, wipes and steps back has almost certainly left resin proud or dished.

What the polish does, and what it cannot do

After leveling, the spot is polished lightly so its gloss matches the glass around it. Freshly scraped resin reads slightly dull, which is why a technically flush repair can still look like a smudge until it is buffed. The polish is a surface finish step on the resin, nothing more.

It is not the same operation as polishing glass to remove damage. Cutting into the glass itself with an abrasive compound removes material unevenly and creates a shallow lens, which is why that technique has hard limits, set out in what glass polishing can and cannot fix. On a repair, aggressive machine polishing is actively harmful: dwelling in one spot heats the cured resin, softens it, and can leave a slight depression that bends light. A hand polish or a brief, moving pass is the correct amount.

The fingernail test and four others you can run in a minute

Do this before you pay, outdoors, with the technician still there. None of it requires any knowledge of the trade.

  1. Run a fingernail across the pit from four directions. Up, down and both sides. It should glide across with no catch either way. A catch on one direction only usually means a one sided ridge from a single scraping pass.
  2. Mist the glass and look. Water gathers in a dish and beads away from a proud spot. A repair that holds a visible droplet after the rest of the glass has sheeted off is not flush.
  3. Wet the screen and run the wipers once. Use washer fluid, never dry glass. Listen for a tick and watch for a blade that skips at the repair. A clean sweep means the surface is continuous.
  4. Look at it at a steep angle in daylight. Cured resin spilled on the glass around the pit shows as a dull halo from about 45 degrees and is nearly invisible straight on. It should have been scraped and polished off.
  5. Look through it from the driver's seat. Anything that bends or shifts the scene behind it is distortion rather than a blemish, and distortion is worth raising immediately.

The last row is the one to hold on to. A perfect finish does not make the break disappear, and what a repaired chip looks like sets that expectation properly. Judge the finish by feel and reflection, and judge the fill by how much silver is left.

Why this step gets rushed

Nothing about the pit fill is difficult. It gets skipped because of how the work is priced and scheduled. A repair is a flat rate job of roughly 20 to 40 minutes, most of which is setup and cycling, and the finishing steps are the only part that can be compressed without anything obvious happening in the moment.
